The Washington Nationals lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 8-3 in their finale Sunday to lay claim to the worst record in the major leagues, and hence the No. 1 draft pick. The Mariners, who chose the final weekend of the season to record their first home sweep of the season, will draft second. Even had the Mariners lost Sunday, they still couldn't have gotten the top pick. They would have finished 60-102, while the Nationals, who never made up a postponed game, finished 59-102. If the Nationals played the missing game and won, matching the Mariners" record, they still would win the tiebreaker because they had a worse record than the Mariners in 2007. The Mariners took control of what some have dubbed the Strasburg Sweepstakes with a 12-game losing streak in the middle of this month, only to see the Nationals wrest it away by losing nine of their final 10. The projected No. 1 draft pick at this point is San Diego State University pitcher Stephen Strasburg, but there's still a chance the Nationals -- who have been famously averse to huge signing bonuses for draft picks -- would pass on Strasburg, who is represented by Scott Boras, because of the anticipated cost and difficulty of signing him.

It ain't all bad is it? Nats would be fools not to sign Strasburg. Oh wait, they have Bowden. This could happen! Nationals should be having some good players coming up soon.
