Nationals at the plate: Austin Kearns scored Washington's first run of the game after Brian Schneider doubled to right-center field off Oliver Perez in the fourth inning. Shortstop Josh Wilson continued his hot hitting by going 2-for-2. He is now 7-for-14 (.500) on the spring. Chris Snelling scored the second run in the bottom of the seventh on a Bernie Castro's groundout.

Outfielder Darnell McDonald pulled the Nationals within a run with a three-run home run in the eighth against right-hander Alay Soler. In the ninth, with left-hander Eddie Camacho on the mound, Castro scored on a Ronnie Belliard grounder.

In the bottom of the 10th, Nook Logan singled to left off Camacho to drive in Robert Fick with the winning run.

Mets at the plate: New York opened the scoring with four runs in the top of the second inning. Ben Johnson and David Newhan delivered back-to-back solo home runs. Jose Valentin, who also hit a home run in the game, went 2-for-3. Lastings Milledge added a solo homer off lefty Arnie Munoz.

Nationals on the mound: Right-hander Tim Redding pitched two innings, giving up four runs on five hits. He threw 51 pitches, 35 of them strikes. Right-hander Jerome Williams improved from his previous outing, allowing one run in three innings.

Mets on the mound: Perez pitched four innings and gave up a run on two hits. He walked two and struck out none. Relievers Ambiorix Burgos and Pedro Feliciano each pitched a scoreless inning.

Grapefruit League records: Mets 3-8; Nationals 3-7.

Up next: On Sunday afternoon, the Mets play split-squad games in Port St. Lucie and Lakeland against the Marlins (1:10 p.m. ET) and Tigers (1:05), respectively. Left-hander Tom Glavine will get the start against the Marlins, while Aaron Sele goes against the Tigers.

The Nationals travel to Vero Beach at 1:05 to face the Dodgers for the third time this spring. The teams have split the first two games.
