TOP 5 PROSPECTS
- One of the top prospects in baseball, left-handed starting pitcher Clayton Kershawwas promoted to AA after a strong showing to begin the season. Has potential ace stuff, but with Billingsley in town, will likely settle in as a #2 when he fills out. Should reach the majors in mid 2008.
- Right behind Kershaw is LA's second best prospect, giving the Dodgers arguably the top-2 left-handed starters in the minors, Scott Elbert was also promoted to the AA rotation to pitch and develop along Clayton Kershaw. While he's about as far along, and possesses similar intangibles, he doesn't possess the same upside as Kershaw, and as a result has 3rd or 4th starter upside.
- While Andy Laroche looks to lock up 3B for a long time to come, AA's Blake DeWitt has enough power/contact potential to someday be a regular. While he's starting at third in the minors now, his future may come at 2B with Jeff Kent retiring at year's end. He could possibly be a trade bait for LA at the deadline if he continues to develop, as he could step in midseason and contribute on other teams.
- Son of Donnie Baseball himself, many thought the Dodgers were stretching when they took now 19-year-old Preston Mattingly in the first round in 2006. Mattingly has the intangibles that made his father great, and an athletic build 50x better. He's very raw still, and a move to the outfield may be imminent, but the Dodgers view him as a middle of the order hitter with some pop in his bat when he develops. Projected as a starter mid-2009.
- The top reliever in the Dodgers system and most developed prospect listed, Johnathan Meloan could make an impact before the season is out. With a fastball that reaches the low to mid 90s, plus curve, and above average changeup and slider, he projects as a set-up man in time. If he's called up he will likely work in middle relief.
