The Blue Jays purchased the contracts of catcher Jason Phillips and left-hander Brian Tallet, a pair of non-roster invitees to Spring Training. Room was made on the 40-man roster for Phillips when the Mariners claimed catcher Guillermo Quiroz off waivers. In order to place Tallet on the 40-man roster, though, Toronto designated reliever Vince Perkins for assignment.
Perkins made two appearances this spring, allowing four earned runs in 1 1/3 innings. The 6-foot-5 righty spent last season with Double-A New Hampshire, compiling a 7-7 record in 26 games (24 starts).
Tallet appeared in nine games during Spring Training and did not give up a run in 11 1/3 innings. The southpaw allowed seven hits and four walks while striking out six. Phillips batted .308 in 20 games and had five doubles, two home runs and three RBIs.
