Blue Jays Burnett opts out of contract to test Free Agency market

Burnett opts out of contract to enter free agent market

A.J. Burnett is going to test the free agent market.

Burnett's agent Darek Braunecker told the Toronto Blue Jays of his client's decision on Tuesday.

"It's not official yet but we're in the process of doing the paperwork," Darek Braunecker told The Canadian Press. "It's a formality at this point."

The 31-year-old had an option to return to the Blue Jays and make $24 million over the next two seasons.

Braunecker told the team Burnett would still consider signing with them.

"Our talks with (the Blue Jays) have been productive and we will still continue our talks with them," said Braunecker to The Canadian Press. "This is something we needed to do just to give us the opportunity to assess the market and who the other interested parties are."

Due to a strong season in 2008, Burnett is expected to be one of the most sought after pitchers on the market with the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and New York Mets all believed to be interested.

In 2008, Burnett went 18-10 with a 4.07 ERA and 231 strikeouts over his 221.1 innings.
sucks with Shaun Marcum out for the entire 2009 season

Yeah the money freed up would be nice.
But my guess is JP makes a ridiculous offer to Dempster.

which is funny because JP had a golden chance to grab Dempster for dirty cheap after his Florida days but did nothing and Chicago got him

Report: Atlanta to make A.J. Burnett a five-year offer

Will it looks as if AJ will be gone quicker than you can say DL. But there will be a couple of picks that will come out of this deal

And there isn't a pitcher on the sunrise that the Jays have coming in. Litsch as someone on the top end of the rotation scares me.

Re: Burnett opts out of contract to test Free Agency market

The Red Sox are another team that are believed to be interested in Burnett and could extend an offer to him in the near future.
"They asked me if I wanted the ball in Game 6, and I said yes. I'll always say yes. That's what I did with Jack McKeon. I told him, 'Let me see how I feel tomorrow.' I went out, did a long toss, came in and said, 'I'll pitch, I want it, I want to do it.' And it ended up working out." -Josh Beckett

Re: Burnett opts out of contract to test Free Agency market

I'd rather him in Atlanta or somewhere's else before he signs with NY or Boston.
The fact that we would have to play him on a regular basis is something that I would not look forward too.

That is if he doesn't resign at a discounted price, and tell all of his friends to sign too.
