TORONTO -- Negotiations between the Toronto Blue Jays and veteran slugger Matt Stairs of Fredericton were "moving in the right direction" Thursday evening, a source close to the talks told The Canadian Press.

The Blue Jays tabled Stairs a two-year deal earlier in the week in the hopes of retaining the 39-year-old who hit .289 with 21 homers and 64 RBIs in 125 games last season.
