Fractured hand lands Overbay on DL

The Official Site of The Toronto Blue Jays: News: Toronto Blue Jays News

First baseman to miss 4-6 weeks after being hit Sunday

TORONTO -- Lyle Overbay glanced around the clubhouse and couldn't help but laugh some at Toronto's misfortune. The Blue Jays roster has been riddled with injuries this season and the first baseman became the club's latest casualty.

Overbay was struck on the right hand by a pitch from Chicago's John Danks in the third inning on Sunday, and an X-ray revealed a fracture that will sideline the first baseman for an estimated four-to-six weeks. Overbay will be placed on the 15-day disabled list, making him the 11th Toronto player to land on the list this year.

"This is uncharted water for me," said Overbay, who had avoided the DL in his first five seasons. "It's almost comical when you start thinking about all the guys who have gone down. I've never seen anything like this."

After being hit by the pitch, Overbay remained in the game as a baserunner for the Blue Jays. In the fourth inning, though, he had trouble closing his hand as the pain worsened, and Matt Stairs took over at first base. Toronto manager John Gibbons said Stairs would likely garner a lot of the playing time at first, now that Overbay is temporarily out of the picture.

"He'll play a lot over there, but we'll see," said Gibbons, who can also use catcher Jason Phillips at first base on occasion.

Toronto hasn't revealed who will be promoted from the Minor Leagues to fill Overbay's spot on the active roster. The Blue Jays don't play again until Tuesday, when they open a three-game series against Tampa Bay, so Toronto doesn't need to announce a roster move just yet.
A lot of injuries to the Jays this season already.

Matt Stairs will take over 1st base duties against RHP, Stairs has been one of the Jays best hitter this season.

The Blue Jays confirmed that Matt Stairs would get most of the action at first base while Lyle Overbay is sidelined.
Stairs has been playing a lot of left field. Now Adam Lind will resume getting the bulk of the time there. Troy Glaus could see occasional action at first base against left-handers. The Jays could also give Jason Phillips some time there after Gregg Zaun returns.
Getting Stairs more playing time is a good thing, too bad it had to come at Overbay's health.

Interesting that Glaus could see time at 1st base, to my knowledge he never has played there, but Glaus was playing Short-Stop for a few games last year so it could work out.
