    Jays lose Ryan, Glaus, Johnson

Baseball News - Jays lose Ryan, Glaus, Johnson - sportsnet.ca
TORONTO (CP) -- Toronto Blue Jays closer B.J. Ryan will miss four-to-six weeks with an elbow sprain while all-star third baseman Troy Glaus will be placed on the disabled list Tuesday.

Left-fielder Reed Johnson also opted for back surgery to repair the herniated disc in his lower back on a busy day of sorting out injuries for the club. Johnson will have the procedure done Tuesday in St. Petersburg, Fla., and will be out until July.

Johnson was batting .265 this season with a home run and seven RBIs.

Adam Lind will start in place of Johnson.

The news on Ryan came as a relief, allaying team fears that his injury could be longer term. The all-star closer was examined by specialist Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday and he confirmed the club's initial assessment.

Ryan was placed on the DL on Sunday after he blew two of his first five save chances. The injury first began bothering him during spring training and worsened as the season progressed.

Jason Frasor is taking over closer duties in Ryan's absence.

But placing Glaus on the disabled list was somewhat of a surprise as the Blue Jays hoped to have him back in the lineup Tuesday when they open a three-game series with the Boston Red Sox.

He has a bone spur in his left heel and a sore hamstring. There was no timeline given for his return.

Not looking good, hopefully they all come back 100%.

thats true, the Jays do need his power, with Rios being the new lead off man (with Johnson gone), Rois' power is gone but at the same time Overbay drops back down in the lineup and Adam Lind gets playing time now.

It kind of works out with Lind getting more time (taking Johnson's spot in LF) but I would like to see Glaus back as soon as possible at 3B, his bat will be missed.
