Pass, Beltran is another guy signed forever. Even though he has the capacity to be good, NYM has limited funds. Ha, New York poor. Who knew. After 2008, they'll have Garland and Contraband off the books. And they got a solid replacement in Anderson.

    I second KOZ's sentiment.

The Mets have to do something about that payroll, and it probably has to wait until next year.

I'm really leaning towards failing this. Garland is crap, as is Contreras.

this does nothing for the Mets this season...maybe if Dam were taking on some money or giving something of value besides Anderson, then yea...but as is no.

I think this trade deserves more thought than I usually give, so I'll put up an explanation

Then out of fairness to the others you will be Slagathor.

    Talent Wise:
OK, looking at the deal on a talent given/received, easy win for Chicago. Beltran is by far the best player in this deal. Contreras is a wallet-lightener for one year, Garland is capable but severely overpaid. Anderson is a nice OF prospect, but his peak doesn't meet Beltran's current status. Rolls is useless.

On that basis alone, I'd veto this, but I HAVE to look at the money, since that is the focus. Post will be continued

    Monetarily.

This is how the estimated cost of the players looks over the next five years (the length of Beltran's contract, assuming Rolls is called up and leaves after this year) with the money given to cover Garland for 2007

    Chicago:
    2007: 17,000,000
    2008: 17,000,000
    2009: 17,000,000
    2010: 17,000,000
    2011: 17,000,000

    New York:
    2007: 17,600,000 (+600,000)
    2008: 9,960,000 (-7,040,000)
    2009: 300,000 (-16,700,000)
2010: 2,500,000 (an estimated arby cost for BAnderson) (-14,500,000)
    2011: 2,750,000 (-14,250,000)

As you can see here, this will be a huge burden off the back of NY STARTING in 2008. This does nothing for him this year, and since it's after the FA period anyway, it's not a huge deal.

So, I looked at New York's future financial situation without this deal, and it's bleak. Ignoring any arby increases in players or dollars and assuming he'd cut Victor Zambrano, he'd have about 8-10 million to work with to get a new catcher and probably first baseman to replace Delgado's on the field. Basically, he'd need to deal a good to great prospect for someone to take on Manny or Delgado to free up room without this. The year after that, he loses two big contracts in Manny and Pedro, but that's two game years from now.

I think getting Anderson makes this a fair price for a year of financial freedom (well, at least 9 million more dollars). Pass.

I'm going with fail, unless Dam is willing to put up 4 mil to cover Garland.

That's 3-2 pass by my count (I think Witlon is passing, but I'm not sure) with redsfan left to vote.

And if I have my TC rules right, if one TC member is involved, it has to be a 4-2 pass, or if it's 3-3, it either goes to an outside source or fails

It seems like a lot of mediocre players for Beltran, fail.

So, do we go to McKain or Mission for this one?

Since Dam pointed this deal out to me, I'll vote on it.

Holy damn New York's GM put them in a nice financial hole.

I'm going to pass, Waruv's financial write-up basically shows me all I need to, New York ****ed themselves bad and this is a pretty significant step one in the right direction.
