On to our 1st topic.....Chris Carpenter pitched an 8-hitter to improve his record to 17-4. Can Chris Carpenter be the much needed shutdown ace starter in the playoffs? Around the Horn to Realmofo.

I think Carpenter's shown he can take over the mantle of No. 1 starter. He's thrown 5 complete games, including 4 shutouts, both are indications of a shutdown ace. Carpenter's always had great stuff and was touted as a future No. 1 when he was in Toronto. He throws in the low 90s and his out pitch is a 12-6 curveball that is just nasty and he throws strikes with all his pitches. The main issue with him in Toronto was health and as long as he is healthy, he is the No. 1 starter that the Cards will need in the playoffs to overcome heavy offensive teams like the Red Sox.

Ofcourse he can! The Cards' main threat in the NL are the Atlanta Braves. Against them, in Carpenter's one outing (where he faced a very potent Braves lineup, similar to the one he is likely to see in the playoffs) he went 8 innings, gave up 4 hits (2 solo shots) and struck out TEN! Another possible contender in the NL are the Astros..3-0, 0.38 ERA, 17 Ks, .190 BAA. What's not to like? A WHIP under 1! This guy is not only a shutdown ace, he is the NL Cy Young!

this is a guy who hasn't lost since june 8th, and frankly i don't think he ever will. 2.25 ERA and a WHIP of .98...Chris is for real. not only has Carpenter pitched well at home (2.47 ERA, 23/103 bb/k), but he's pretty much owned on the road (1.92 ERA, 16/58 bb/k). To me, the road stats mean a lot to me because after last year the cards needed help at boston, which if they aren't carefull they'll need that help again...and Carpenter can provide that help on the road...he is the ace.
