Detroit Red Wings waive (buying out), Derian Hatcher, Ray Whitney, and Darren McCarty. For the upcoming season, including the 24 per cent rollback, Hatcher's contract calls for a salary of $4.94 million, McCarty $1.71 million and Whitney $2.66 million.
Phoenix Coyotes buy out Brian Savage, The Coyotes bought him out for $1.9 million
The Montreal Canadiens have decided not to exercise club options on the contracts of defenceman Patrice Brisebois and minor league forward Gavin Morgan.
The Colorado Avalanche said Monday they plan to honour the big-ticket contracts of Joe Sakic and Rob Blake
With the 24 per cent rollback on all current contracts, Sakic (at $6.65 million) and Blake ($6.36 million) would cost about $13 million combined for the upcoming season. Forsberg and Foote are both unrestricted free agents. If they are not signed by Aug. 1, they will be on the open market.
John Muckler: No buyouts in Ottawa
That means they'll retain the services of forward Bryan Smolinski (scheduled to earn $2.24 million in 2005-06) and defenceman Greg de Vries ($2.28 million) - both rumoured to be headed out of Ottawa.
If Mike Modano doesn't return to the Dallas Stars this season he would consider joining former teammate Brett Hull in Phoenix.
The Pittsburgh Penguins will know long before the start of training camp in September if 2004 first-round draft pick Evgeni Malkin will join an ever-growing lineup of scorers that will soon include Sidney Crosby.

The Ducks are shopping their #2 overall pick. A trade could involve Vancouver's Todd Bertuzzi or Ed Jovanovski.
Brian Burke would be out of his mind if he's trying to trade the #2 pick for mainly Jovanovski. Bertuzzi's a top goal scorer, but trading the #2 for him has "Alexei Yashin for Justin Spezza and Zdeno Chara" written all over it, IMO.

Burke would be lucky to land someone like Bertuzzi or Jovo for the 2nd overall, it isn't a great draft outside of Crosby
the chances of getting jovo is very small with the re-signing of Ozzie

ATL's looking to stockpile prospects this year, I guess.
Nice strategy, I'd say.
