Why doesn't Joe Johnson deserve it? Even if you overpay him to stay, it can't be any more ridiculous than the contract extensions that Marvin Williams and Zaza Pachulia received.

The thing is that if you were to sign Joe Johnson for six seasons (if you're Atlanta), he will be 35 by the final year of that contract. You are talking about a guy that will have played nearly 35,000 minutes when this season is over. Joe Johnson is going to physically break down very soon. Not to mention, he is someone who hasn't exactly shown up in big games. If I am Atlanta, I don't even think about giving him another contract unless it's for three years.

(of course - if I was Atlanta, I'd be trying my hardest to trade for Amare to make an ECF push for 2010 and 2011)

Well, I didn't say you should sign Johnson for six years. I don't see him getting a max contract like the other FA's for those reasons.

Oh man, the Lakers are so ****ed when the Kobe era ends. I don't think Laker fans the realize the dynamics that took to get the future Hall of Famer to begin with.

1) He wasn't barred from making the jump straight from high school to the NBA. Certainly, he could have been a future No. 1 overall pick out of Duke.

2) Hype machines such as rivals.com either didn't exist or weren't as popular, so he had a relatively low profile among a deep pool of college basketball stars in the same draft.

3) Being the son of an ex-NBA player, securing high lottery selection money wasn't a priority for him, allowing him to force the hands of teams he didn't want to play for.

4) The Charlotte Hornets just had to have Vlade Divac.
