NFL Does Favre make the Jets playoff contenders?

Favre will make the Jets better, that's for sure, but does he make them playoff contenders?

Keep in mind, this is the same team that went 4-12 last year.

Of course, they wouldn't be the first team to make that kind of turn around either. (The Chargers went 4-12 the year before they went 12-4 and lost to the Jets in the playoffs)

It's almost a given that the Colts, Chargers, and Patriots will win their respective divisions.

This makes the Jets' competition the Jaguars, Titans, Texans, whoever doesn't win the AFCN between Cleveland or Pittsburgh, and maybe Denver and/or Cincinnati.

I think Favre can push them over the top.

Favre alone, I don't know. BUT Favre, Kris Jenkins, Calvin Pace, Bubba Franks, Tony Richardson, Damien Woody, and Alan Faneca along with the maturation of D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Nick Mangold probably will make the playoff CONTENDERS.

All those other players were already in place, though.

The question isn't asking if Favre can take them by himself without their help.

The question is asking if trading for Favre made them contenders.

I don;t see it and I don;t buy it. Farve in a new offense in a better league with another year of age on him is not a formula for success. Jets spent a lot of money to fall short this season.

As compared to last year they are vastly improved. I think they have improved enough(with all those offseason acquisitions) to be a playoff team. It is impossible to say whether the one acquisition of Favre was what did it.

Contenders? Yes. Will they make it? No. He is now in the much tougher AFC. Like Hwood said, Chargers, Colts and Patriots are all locks. Favre will make this team better but I just don't see them making the playoffs. They have to battle with, the Titans (play good D and have a good rushing game) Texans (improved ball club) Cleveland, Pitt, Denver, Cinci and Buffalo. I don't see them going from 4-12 to 12-4 at all. Favre will give this team maybe 2 more wins, not 8.

Who are his receivers? Jericho Crotchery? Bubba Franks?
Greg Jennings' left leg alone is a better receiving corp.

    Laveraneus Coles, Cotchery, Franks, Keller...

I see them going at least 10-6. Now, is it possible I'm wrong...yes! But I think that these acquisitions are enough to put us right up there with the wildcard teams...if not better than some of them.

Re: Does Favre make the Jets playoff contenders?

No b/c we were playogff contenders before we got Favre. People forget we have been an every other year team aince '02:

    2002: win division
    2003 6-10
2004 kick away from title game
    2005 4-12
    2006 10-6, WC team
    2007 4-12

We were going to be good w/ oo w/o Bret. We could be worse w/ Brett than I expected w/ Chad but if Brett is just decent we'll definitely be playoff contenders. if he plays like he did last year we could win a game or 2 in January.

Coles & Cotchery are as good, if not better, than Jennings and Driver.

    2006 & 2007:
Coles and Cotch: 310 recs, 3835 yds, 20 TDs
    Jennings & Driver: 272 recs, 3895 yds, 25 TDs

The #s are pretty similar. The averages are better b/c Favre thjrows it down field more so they should make up those #s fairly easily and GB threw it 208 more times the last 2 years sot hat's 208 more chances to add to those stats. Our starting duo is as good, if not better, as GBs. Don't let the 4-12 record fool you. 2 years ago we were 10-6 and went into GB and beat them 38-10. We made some bad decisions on the OL a year ago and it killed us as the OL was awful plus Chad was playing w/ 2 toen ligaments in his ankle and a 1st year QB was leading us the rest of the way. Favre has weapons here and if he can get up to speed on the system he'll have a good year.

This makes them contenders, I see them losing out on the Wildcard though.

ESPN compared Coles/Cotchery to Jennings/Driver. Driver and Coles had the SAME number of catches, Cotchery and Jennings were off by 2. And if I'm not mistaken, Cotchery/Driver are the same height, Jennings/Coles are the same height. The pairs are actually pretty similar

What does that have to do with anything?

Them developing a coincidental pattern over the past 6 years doesn't mean anything for 2008.

Re: Does Favre make the Jets playoff contenders?

Favre alone does not. But when you take into account all the additions they made, I think they are playoff CONTENDERS. Not a guarantee to make it, but they will be competitive. Especially with their schedule, I can see them going 10-6
