Two years ago the Panthers traded star goaltender Roberto Luongo for Todd Bertuzzi, a washed up free agent-to be who the Panthers had no intention of re-signing, replacement goalie Alex Auld who was eventually replaced, and Bryan Allen, a defenseman who's been so good for them that on Friday they traded their leading scorer to Phoenix in exchange for two average guys to address their needs...on defense.

It's OK, Horton will just score twice as many goals for the Panthers now that the defense is improved and can help increase ice time at the other end of the rink. It makes perfect sense.

Don't get me wrong, I like Ballard. He has good presence and talent, likely he will be a big asset for the Panthers. But despite Jokinen wanting a trade, you would think they would find a bigger haul or simply tell him to tough it out and get a couple of the many average to above average defensemen who will be floating around in free agency.

reports out of Calgary and Vancouver was that Florida wanted Phaneuf (since Keenan is there) and the Sedins twin or Alex Edler with another young roster player in Vancouver (since Lou is there)

Edmonton also put an offer in but got shot down and was waiting to get Phoenix back to them to put in a better offer. I don't know what was offered from Edmonton but they are stocked with d-men and had Joni Pitkanen on the trade block.

I know they were somewhat in the chase for a playoff spot last season, I mean out there, but still close. But to me I believe they would have gotten more out of Ollie if they had traded him at lastyears deadline. Look at the deal Atlanta got for a rental deal on Hossa. Florida would have gotten a whole lot more at that time, than what they got from Phoenix.

P.S. The Coyotes somewhat may be respectable this season. They'll pick up a D-Man from FA, and than they could have something going here for the next season.

blame Brian Burke he let it happen, could have traded Bryz long before but never pulled the trigger

Yeah Burke sorta missed the mark on that one.
He could have gotten something out of the deal, but got another team better instead. A team in the same division none the less.
