Re: Gus Johnson is calling the MMA fights on CBS

This is the last I read of him...

Showtime has no interest in Slice vs. Shamrock – Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson has a future fighting on Showtime, but the same can't be said for the man he was supposed to face last year.

Despite Ferguson's lack of experience and Ken Shamrock's lack of recent success, the EliteXC bout between the two was poised to draw a big audience on CBS this past October, before Shamrock torpedoed the fight with the now infamous warm-up cut above his eye.

With Strikeforce now controlling the immediate rights to Ferguson's contract and Shamrock willing to fight for just about anyone, the bout could easily be made a second time. However, Showtime wants no part of it.

"There's been no conversation about that, and there won't be," said Ken Hershman, Showtime's senior vice president and general manager of sports and event programming.

Hershman wouldn't shed any light on his rationale for not wanting to make the fight, but Shamrock clearly didn't do himself any favors in the eyes of TV programming executives with the rookie mistake he made that October night in Florida. Since then, the 45-year-old UFC Hall of Famer has made a mockery of himself and the sport by beating a grotesquely overweight Ross Clifton in a fight on Feb. 13 in Fresno, Calif.

Don't expect the elder Shamrock on Showtime anytime soon.

I couldn't find another thread to post this, but this is good enough with Fedor's upcoming fight on CBS and Gus Johnson is back to call the action.
Since reader feedback on Fedor is split right down the middle, here’s a handy form to ease your email experience: “Dear moron, How dare you rank Fedor so [low/high]!!!! Fedor is [nature’s most unstoppable force/afraid of Kimbo Slice] and [could kill a great white shark with his bare hands/would get knocked out by Joe Benavidez]!!!! Get your head out of [Dana’s/Coker’s] backside and put Fedor [No. 1/out of the Top 10] or I’m never clicking on Yahoo! Sports again!!!! Love, [Reader].”
Rankings: Shogun's revenge - UFC - Yahoo! Sports

Count me in as one of the readers who say Fedor should be left out of the top 10 until he stops dodging the best heavyweights.

Mir took care of Kongo very quickly last night at 107

Big Nog/Velasquez is officially set for 110

only noteworthy fight in the HWs from now to 110 is Junior Dos Santos vs. Gilbert Yvel at 108

the LW division getting more interesting with Penn just destroying Sanchez at 107, just GSP and the WW, Penn is clearing out the division who will be next?

Aoki -vs- Penn UFC Japan 112?!!??!!?!?!?!

Good show last night, glad I watched it...
Penn showed his dominance, Mir showed that he still got it, Finch looks weak, and Ken-Flo looked like he made the right move in changing camps.

penn will destroy aoki... aokis stand up game is on par with diegos. it will take a welterweight to drop down and face penn, to give him a tough fight.

kflo looked great last night, but im sure theyll be hesitant to give him another title shot, because of his previous two failed attempts in title fights.

i thought mir having to cut weight to make the weigh in was gonna hurt him... quite honestly didnt. he looked fantastic. mir, big nog is gonna fight cain at 110 (rumored at least), dos santos fights yvel on the undercard of evans/silva. theyll probably put the interim title on big nog/cain, with carwin, dos santos and mir waiting in the wings. the heavyweight division doesnt look so bad, even without brock.

edit: so much for it being rumored, good call 3 posts up halladay.

damarques johnson and alan belcher both looked good, on the prelim card. johnson was the tuf 9 runner up, he caught garcia with an up kick, and garcia fell right into a triangle. it was pretty nice honestly. belcher just dominated gouveia.

and buentello/struve was a very underrated fight. first round was a ground contest, but then they both started to trade in the 2nd and 3rd, and it turned into a fun little brawl.

has nothing to do with the US, from a canadian sports network after all

UFC champ Georges St-Pierre repeats as Canadian Athlete of the Year | MMAjunkie.com
Georges St-Pierre today was named Sportsnet's Canadian Athlete of the Year.

The 28-year-old UFC welterweight champion also won the award in 2008.

Fan voting determined the winner, and St-Pierre beat out fellow Canadian Sidney Crosby, who captained the 2009 Pittsburgh Penguins and won the NHL's 2009 Stanley Cup.

personally i dont mind the interim title going on either of the fights... because its an easy build up to winner vs winner for the belt anyway... with a big money pay day vs lesnar when hes ready to go. and mir, to be fair... has won 4 of his last 5 fights, with a win over lesnar in there (albeit vs a green lesnar with a lucky ankle lock... but luck is part of the game too).

I know people complain that Lesnar should have won the first bout with Mir because the ref should have stopped the fight, but give Mir credit for managing to endure all those punches to his head. Alas, Mir was shit out of luck in the rematch.

Mazzagatti acted right in the 1st Mir/Lesner match, people who say otherwise didn't watch close enough

little fact, Dana White and Lesnar both hate Steve Mazzagatti, don't know why White hates him but Lesner hate just goes back to that match

Brock lost that fight fair and square. You finish your opponent when you can and you don't wait for the ref to call the match. Brock hired a team of lawyers to review the fight, and they still couldn't find anything wrong.
