Who in the hell is Mel Kiper anyway?

Great clip from former Colts GM Bill Tobin from the 1994 draft on Mel Kiper

Who the hell is Mel Kiper, anyway? I mean here's a guy that critisizes everybody, whoever they take. He's got the answers to who you should take and who you shouldn't take. He tells you about your team, he tells us about the Rams, he tells us about Tampa and everything else. In my knowledge of him, he's never ever put on a jock strap, he's never been a player, he's never been a coach, he's never been a scout, he's never been an administrator, and all of a sudden he's an expert. He's in our papers two days ago telling us who we have to take. We don't have to take anybody that Mel Kiper says we have to take. Mel Kiper has no more credentials to do what he's doing than my neighbor, and my neighbor's a postman, and he doesn't even have season tickets to the NFL

Too bad Kiper was dead on when he ripped the Colts that year.

yep he was, because Jim Harbaugh didn't take them to the AFC Championship game. It's such a shame that they passed on that "franchise QB" Trent Dilfer... or that other "franchise QB" Heath Schueller.

Oh, and didn't they draft some guy named Marshall Faulk that year?

I'm sure if Harbaugh had the 2000 Ravens defense he would've won as well

Dilfer is my favorite whipping boy for idiots who do nothing but count rings and wins and losses when evaluating individual talent.

Oh, and if you didn't notice my edit, the other "franchise QB" that Kiper ripped on them for passing up was Heath Schueller...the morons took Marshall Faulk instead, what were they thinking?

I'm not a huge fan of Mel Kiper. He studies players all year round. He has decent knowledge of the first player in the draft and the last player in the draft. He'll be dead on and he'll be wrong. But either way he is an expert and he has a vast knowledge of all college playeres.

He ripped them after the Trev Alberts pick. And he was more ripping into them for their past draft picks. Their past four first round draft picks before that? Sean Dawkins, Steve Emtman, Quentin Coryatt, and Jeff George.

you're right, but you have to admit he did look like a fool for riipping them for that inparticular draft, even if the one person he chose to focus on most was a bust.

I just like the quote cuz it's funny, fitting, and hillarious, regardless of whether or not he was right in that specific case

Yes, ripping them in the draft where they picked Marshall Faulk (although he did not have his best seasons in Indy and they did not get nearly enough value out of the trade) made him look sort of dumb. And I agree, it was hilarious what he said, they showed that highlight this year during the draft.

Kiper knows quite a bit. Definetly the #1 draft expert in my book.
    I aim to try
