    1. It appears that some psychological disorders are not universal. In other words, there appear to be culture-bound syndromes, or disorders within particular groups of people.
For example, in the Pacific Islands there is a behavior pattern called AMOK which is seen among men and is characterized by brooding followed by a violent outburst Often started by a slight or insult. Other examples:

Brain *** (West Africa) a mental and physical reaction to the challenges of schooling.
Koro (East Asia) intense anxiety that sexual organs will recede into body and cause death.
Dhat (India, China) severe anxiety associated with the discharge of semen and feelings of exhaustion.
Shenkul (China) anxiety and panic with bodily complaints attributed to life-threatening loss of semen.
Susto (Latin America) Illness related to a frightening event that makes the soul leave the body.
Eating Disorders (United States) Is this a culture-bound syndrome?
Multiple Personality Disorder (United States) Is this a culture-bound syndrome too?

source: Case Studies in Abnormal Behavior (4th Ed.) Meyer

Robert Meyer makes the argument that our culture here in the United States has created some psychological disorders, e.g., eating disorders and multiple-personality disorder (now known as Disassociative Indentity Disorder or DID), because these only seem to be frequent in the United States and Europe.

Are these two disorders a creation of our society as Meyer argues?

Wow, I got completely wasted last night and have been unable to access a computer since then. (And it wasn't even from beer, it was from an excess of Doritos and Mountain Dew.)

Anyways, the deadline is up. No more questions. Thread now closed, Wally Mo Pena will have an answer thread up shortly.
