Unofficially, this is going to be renamed the Mos Def weekend, because he's in two box office shindigs.
Aquamarine
Starring: Emma Roberts, JoJo, and Sara Paxton
Theatre count: 2,500
Things to know: This is not a Disney film, and this is nothing to do with the comic book character The Submariner, in the event you never see an ad for this film. I have really nothing else to say other than this is a crappy kid flick.
16 Blocks
Starring: Bruce Willis, Mos Def, and David Morse
Director Alert: Richard Donner (Superman; Lethal Weapon flicks)
Theatre count: over 2,700
Things to know: Richard Donner's cred when it comes to action-buddy films featuring cops is very successful. Bruce Willis' cred when it comes to action films featuring cops is very successful. Mos Def is not Jennifer Lopez, Madonna, uh.. 50 Cent, and who ever the Hell else, as his film track record features the Hitchhiker's Guide; The Monsters Ball; The Italian Job; and Something the Lord Made(in other words, he can actually act almost as well as he writes/performs).
Dave Chappelle's Block Party
Performances by: Dave Chappelle, Kanye West, Mos Def, The Roots, and The Fugees
Theatre count: 800, possible 1,000 as Friday nears.
Things to know: This is a combination of music performances and comedic performances. It's about at the point that America will flock to anything with Dave Chappelle's name on it. Oh, and the artists performing actually give hip-hop a good name.
UltraViolet
Starring: Milla Jovovich, William Fichtner, and Cameron Bright
Theatre count: 2,500
Things to know: The director, Kurt Wimmer, has a cult following thanks to the DVD phenom Equilibrium(which beats the Hell out of the Matrix films). Milla Jovovich again portrays a female badass out to kick everyone's ass. Unfortunately, what it also has going for it is that it looks like Aeon Flux. And Bloodrayne. And those films sucked.
You have till 11:59 p.m. EST Friday to select a film that will gross the most over the weekend. Good luck!
