Seriously though, we use to be the edge of societial and technological advancement. This just reinforces to me that we aren't the pioneers we use to be. We honor societial garbage like Honey Boo Boo, Cash me out round back, and even our current President while mocking much of science... its no surprise that we've ended up where we are.
It wasn't a shot at the importance of math. Hell it wasn't even a shot and if it were it'd be at our underachieving society

That's all fine and dandy, but that doesn't take away from my point that we shouldn't be waiting until college to teach those that do want to move on to advance society the basic components of what it takes to actually advance everything we depend on as a society.

Also, there's much much more basic uses of math that most people do not realize if they actually took the time to learn it instead of whining about simple problems like solving for x in 2x - 5 = 10

You're not really taking a shot at the importance of math, but much of what my initial reply was is taking a shot at math.

I'm not laughing like that when someone says they don't like math, i'm laughing like that when they share those memes whining about their lot in life "but hey, at least I know the Pythagorean theorem!"

Anyways, I wasn't looking for a drawn out debate but Mach takes it there because he likes to.

I'll let Maddox do the talking for me.

    Math doesn't suck, you do.

    I just wanted to use

But they are using algebra to figure out how much they make in incentives.

I also find it kind of funny that many people who post these complaints say that instead of math they should be taught how to balance a checkbook. It's funny because if you know the basic fundamentals of math you shouldn't have to be taught a specific application that relies solely on the basic fundamentals of math.

All balancing a checkbook is is measuring your income versus your outcome. I never took a formal class on how to balance a check book, nor was I taught by any adult figure in my life. I just took what I know of math (and Excel) and figured it out on my own.

I'm not saying that we should wait?

If anything, maybe there should be a selection of math classes a little earlier than there currently is. Senior year of high school you had your choice of advanced algebra/trig or calc. I see no reason to place that path a little earlier with algebra or liberal arts.

I find some of your takes overly simplistic.

    And also shallow and pedantic.

My brother, who will be lucky to get out of the deli department, has absolutely no use for an algebra class. He needs basic arithmetic - that's it. We knew that with him around 8th grade.

false dichotomy. The problem is most of the people waste time learning all of that while also not learning a bunch of other stuff being taught whereas they could have accomplished the same thing with a class solely focused on how to manage money.

They don't figure it out - they ask the accounting dept and then I yell at them to fuck off and sell something.

Understanding something more than basic arithmetic helps you gain a higher ceiling than the deli department. That's my point entirely.

Now if you want to discuss individual abilities to learn that's a different conversation.
