Shocked 'New Moon' destroys 'Dark Knight'

You cannot stop it, you can only hope to contain it.

Summit Entertainment’s vampire-romance sequel “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” rung up a record $72.7 million in opening-day boxoffice on Friday, easily topping domestic rankings.

That bested a previous single-day boxoffice mark of $67.2 million, set by Warner Bros.’ Batman sequel “The Dark Knight” in July 2008.The first-day tally for “New Moon” included $26.3 million in boxoffice from a total 3,514 performances at12:01 a.m. Friday, which set a record for witching-hour coin.

Consensus pre-release forecasts put the likely first-weekend tally for “New Moon” at $85 million-plus. Not even a meteoric burnout on Saturday and Sunday would keep the largely female-fueled film from soaring well past those projections.

“Dark Knight” holds the record for the biggest opening ever, at $158.4 million. Whether “New Moon” – which is playing in more than 4,024 locations this weekend – will hold up well enough in its second and third days of release to approach that record is virtually unknowable, as the sequel is traveling into uncharted territory for the franchise.

That is crazy, and I don't think Robert Pattingson is in it much, since Edward only appeared in the last 50 pages of the book or so. Glad that I stayed away from the madness in theatre. Don't want to be trampled over by stampede of teenage girls.

I'll never understand this lame, sudden obsession with vampires.

Girls love this, but would they honestly love the kind of guy that would want to bite their neck with teeth that pierce? Not the posterboy for this movie, the kind of guy who shows up to parks only when its getting dark and hangs out back behind the restroom where light is minimal.

    Just sayin'.
(Also, as a fan of The Bat, this saddens me.)

$140.7 million opening weekend for New Moon, holy crap. That's the third biggest opening weekend in the history of movies, behind only The Dark Knight ($158.4 million) and Spider-Man 3 ($151.1 million).

I feel bad for the males who had to see this movie. Most likely were forced by their gfs. The book was not good, so don't know the obsession of it. At least Twilight was entertaining. New Moon is just about Bella whining.

At least if you're forced there by your GF you can be compensated later that night by a happy GF.

My brother was dragged along by our sister because her husband's in California.

Only if you don't laugh/make fun/talking at the movie. I got many evil/intention to kill stares from the teenagers during the premiere of Twilight last year. The movie was not meant to be funny, but I just couldn't help it with the script and the acting. Especially when Edward Cullen say "Hang on tight spider monkey," I lost it completely.

    Sorry about your brother.
