Nottingham Turns Into Robin Hood

MTV talked to Ridley Scott, who revealed that some big chances have been made to the previously-titled Nottingham, the director's next project. Here are a few excerpts:

That statement is notable, not only in that those first two projects are moving forward, but that "Nottingham" has now officially been renamed to reflect its lead character. "Oh yes, I think we are just going to call it 'Robin Hood'," Scott revealed. "We start in almost 2 months."

In an attempt to clarify all the confusion from a few months ago about Russell Crowe playing multiple roles, Scott was eager to say that he had changed his mind, and that Crowe will simply portray the famed archer who rises from an unlikely background. "Robin Hood is in the army of Richard Coeur de Lion," he said of how we'll find the character early in the film "He is a bowman in the army of Richard Coeur de Lion."

"[Crowe as both Robin and the Sheriff of Nottingham] was an idea so far back, way back when at the time I had this proposed to me, and I read it and thought, 'I don't really know what it does for it, but it's alright'," Scott recalled of the now-abandoned idea. "It is better to simply have the evolution of a character called Robin Hood, who will come out of a point in the Crusades which is the end."

The original plan was Crowe would be Nottingham, and instead of being an evil ass like we've seen Alan Rickman portray (or whoever played the Sheriff in Men in Tights), the Sheriff was a good guy and Robin Hood was going to be more of a menace. And early rumors were that either Christian Bale or Sam Worthington would be Robin Hood (co stars of the Terminator film). I kinda liked that they were going with an original take on the mythos, but it seems like it'll be something in the vain of the Sherlock Holmes, just a reboot of a pop culture figure.

I am really disappointed by this turn. It could still turn out to be a good flick, but it really seemed like something different would be down versus the expected Robin Hood reboot. I wonder how much this is Scott simply changing his mind or the studio pushing him toward a more commercially viable plot and title.

No doubt the latter. It could be a lot of fun regardless, but I kinda like the idea of going for a new angle of something well known.

Considering Robin Hood is 100% fiction I think he can be as old as they want him to be.
