Opinion Favorite sports story of 2008?

With the year 2008 winding down, it's high time that we start the "year in review" type threads. What was your favorite sports story of 2008?

Tough one here. The three that jump out to mind, for me, are:
    • Tiger Woods making his epic run at the U.S. Open. Dude charged back on the back nine to force an 18-hole Monday playoff and eventually put Big Rocco away on yet another extra hole. And oh yeah, he was doing it all on one leg. Accurate fairway shots, precise putting, just clutch overall.
    • Michael Phelps. Yeah, it's swimming. But dude captivated the sports world for an entire 8 days (16 days if you're NBC). Reefer Boy disagrees with this nomination.
    • The Boston Celtics. I'm far from a Celtics fan and in fact dislike them very much. But in the NBA finals, it was different, because: (1) they took down the evil Lakers; (2) they kept the Rapist from winning a title without $haq; (3) Jesus Shuttlesworth finally got his ring.
Any other good stories I'm missing? Maybe the Patriots getting beat?

Re: Favorite sports story of 2008?

In no order, except the first:

    - Giants winning a Super Bowl for the ages.
    - Michael Phelps dominating the Olympics and working to put swimming on the map.
    - The resurgence of the Boston Celtics, the LA Lakers, and Dwayne Wade.
    - USA basketball reclaiming its rightful place.
    - The Dolphins (!) going from 1 win to contending for the AFC East.
    - Brett Favre retiring, unretiring, and helping to put the Jets in contention.
    - Kansas stunning Memphis after the Tigers collapse in the first ever all-1 seed Final Four.
    - The Tampa Bay Rays making the World Series. Who could have ever seen it coming?
    - Tiger winning the US Open in one knee.
    - The 0-12 Detroit Lions
I did a lot of good things as a sim league GM.

Ah, give me something clever to say here.

    More of my favorite stories...

KRod's quest and eventual breakage of the single-season saves record. He destroyed it.

Rafa Nadal kicking the shit out of Federer at Wimbledon, at least at the start.

and of course, Luis Ayala's continuing (mis)adventures as closer of the New York Mets, one of my favorite stories to follow all year long.

I didn't get much enjoyment from watching Aaron Heilman. Maybe there's no Expos connection which could be why.

I rather enjoyed when OIC stripped the All 10 and under Chinese Women Gymnastic team of gold.

Oh shit, that's right, THEY ****ED THAT UP.
