Attention 7 Year Anny of 9/11

Seems like it just happened. Images still fresh in our minds of planes hitting buildings, people running like wild animals in the streets, buildings crumbling to the ground killing thousands, FDNY, NYPD, tears of unmeasurable sadness not only in New York, not only in the US, but around the world.

All that was left is a giant void. Not only on that plot of land in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania, but in our nation's heart.

    We came together.

We responded, and reacted together as one.

7 years ago the face of our nation was changed forever. Such a traumatic event as 9/11 was will stand out in the memory of all that can remember. Comparable to the attack on Pearl Harbor, the bombing of Hiroshima, even the Challenger exlposion in 1987.

It's terrible that such an event has to occur, and that it takes such an event to get our nation to bond like it did.

We can move on, we can rebuild, but we can never forget those men and women who were lost that terrible day.

    You will not be forgotten.

Re: 7 Year Anny of 9/11

I was on the 3rd day of a 4 day special liberty (days off) I had due to reenlisting.

I was set to set up my change of homeport move the next day (9/12/01) because our ship was changing homeports from Norfolk, Va to San Diego, Ca

I woke up that morning at around 10 am EST, didn't turn on the TV or anything, but just immediately got on my clothes and headed for the bank to wire my mom some money as previously planned the night before, oblivious to anything that was going on at the time.

I walked to Bank of America, deposited the money in my mom's account, and left Bank of America still oblivious to what was going on. (The tellers probably assumed I already knew and didn't mention anything off hand that gave me any indication something was going on.)

I walked back home and picked up the phone to call my mom to tell her I deposited the money and couldn't get through because the lines were busy. I thought that was weird because I never got the message I got before saying all lines were busy, but figured the phone company was just having troubles.

I tried a 2nd time and got through and that's when my mom told me everything and I turned the TV on just in time to see the 2nd plane crash into the 2nd building.

Needless to say, my phone rang about 15 minutes later as I was watching the news telling me I need to get to the ship.

We spent the next 5 days straight on the ship waiting for orders, then the last week before we left for San Diego (after they told us they wouldn't need our ship) on "port/starboards" (24 hr Duty every other day)

Also, as expected, they canceled our three scheduled port visits in South America and we went straight to Hawaii and spent 6 days there instead before going to San Diego.

Wow it's already been 7 years? I was a junior in high school. This just makes me feel old. What a horrible day it was. I remember my friend telling me after my 3rd class. Then during 6th period I had history, and my teacher had the T.V. set up. When I saw the images, that's when I realized exactly what had happened. My one friend only told me terrorist had attacked the WTC.

I remember going to my friends house during lunch time in HS to watch CNN.
I still remember there being talk of 6 planes in the air, and all the confusion that the news was reporting. No one knew what was going on.

    A solemn reminder for all.

I remember waking up to CNN and saying WTF. I was supposed to be off that day. And closed one night and came back and opened the next day.

I would be a jackass to not acknowledge this topic, so here I am. To this day I just can't buy into the media bombardment of patriotic crap like little boys and girls waving maniature American flags. No positive spin about how the nation came together can take away the horrible thought of my first live account of that day - the North Tower going down and knowing that thousands of people were trapped in there.

Well I watch the game between the White Sox and Jays tonight, I noticed that both teams are wearing the same hats they wear on the 1st, and 4th of July, the ones with the stars in the logo, and the Jays one with the Maple leaf in it.

    A nice touch by MLB.

Re: 7 Year Anny of 9/11

    I was in 7th grade.

I found out almost immediately because my teacher's husband worked there and she was kinda using us as a coping device.

He turned out alright, but a bunch of kids in my school lost a parent, and 2 kids lost both.

I knew my fair share of people who died, most firefighters, cops, and PAPD my uncle (Port Authority) was friends with.

My dad lost a bunch of friends too, and my grandma was supposed to be in Battery Park at about that time.

I'll never forget the heroes though, and it pisses me off to see people getting all uppity and political in this thread. A lot of people look at the image of the Towers falling and don't feel compassion...that's fine. It's better for you to feel displaced.

Not all of us feel that way, and not all of appreciate or are upset with the same things.

So SHUT THE **** UP AND KEEP YOUR BS OUT OF THIS THREAD

Re: 7 Year Anny of 9/11

I was in the 7th grade too. This was back when I lived back east. I was running late for school because we had to drop my foster sister Amie off at the airport. She was flying to LA for a movie audition that she had been waiting for her whole life. By the time I got to school, the first plane had already crashed. At first I didn't get it, but when it clicked that Amie could have been on that flight, I went into panic mode. My foster mom called and said that that wasn't Amie's flight that had crashed, and that she was perfectly safe. That is, until the second plane crashed.

I think you can figure out what happened without me having to tell you and relive that morning all over again.
