S3F Driver's Test Question #1

OK, so Rhode Islanders are notoriously bad drivers. Many of my friends during college that were from out of state noted as much. An ex-girlfriend from NYC that then lived in Boston after attending undergrad in Providence said so. Numerous out-of-state friends and family have commented on how bad drivers from RI are. I'm not saying they are the worst drivers ever, but I wanted to get that out of the way before the comments that are sure to come that will try to one-up me here.

One thing RI drivers like to do is block one way of traffic while making a left turn. Pulling out and stopping, arrogantly thinking the oncoming will stop for them. This is probably the number one complaint I've heard and I certainly haven't seen it in other states to the degree that it happens here. Ever since I got my license it has been a dream of mine to win Powerball and intentionally hit anyone I see doing this because legally it would be their fault (at least in RI) because they are blocking traffic. My sister did this, got hit, and it was her fault so don't tell me otherwise.

My issue today (that has also happened many a time) is that jerkasses in RI don't seem to know what a ****ing yield sign means...or worse, they do know and choose to disregard it altogether. So I go out to get a Sunday paper to see what teaching positions are out there because where I worked this year was a horrible place to work. I also got some gas, but anyway...so as I'm on my way I go over an overpass where there is an off-ramp for a highway. The people taking that exit have a yield sign...the lane merges right into the right lane of a two lane street.

I am on said street. Without giving away the correct answer I'll just say what happened. I drive by the off-ramp and a 50 year old dude just cruises right through the yield sign and nearly merges into my car. I honk the horn. He raises both arms acting like "what are you honking at me for?!?!"

So the question is, what are you supposed to do at a yield sign? I want to see what S3F knows.

no, you voted correctly...everyone has so far so I'll just say the answer.

If traffic is coming you yield to it...i.e. stop, let traffic go, proceed when it is clear. If there is no traffic coming, then you just go...no need to stop.

Around here you do see people stop when no one is coming, too....but you see the example from today of just plowing through when traffic is coming a hell of a lot more often.

It should be common sense. you have a yield sign the other lane does not you need to open your eyes and pay foocking (attempt at Northeastern accent) attention to when its clear.

Ohioans in general are also notoriously bad drivers their idea of safe driving is 40 mph in a 60 zone... in the passing lane. And also notorious for driving up to a construction zone and waiting for the absolute last possible moment to get over because they think its their right to skip past people who USE common sense.

I can't stand people who don't Yield. See that alot when there's an entrance ramp for Dodge St (Free way lke with exits) and the people turning right onto the ramp yield to anyone turning left onto it (out of a stoplight).. the right turners just keep going and don't even look sometimes and if your going left and in that lane you can get ran right into.
