The Rangers can't live with Alfonso Soriano. They can't live without him.
Or can they?

The club's second baseman stole two bases in the fourth inning in Friday's 7-1 loss to the Angels at Ameriquest Field to become the first player in franchise history with at least 30 stolen bases and 30 home runs in the same season. The top of the very next inning, he came close to making a good play on defense on a ball hit to his left by Adam Kennedy.

Kennedy's ball was correctly ruled a base hit. Soriano leads all second baseman with 20 errors.

"He has impacted the club in a very positive manner," Rangers assistant general manger Jon Daniels said. "There are multiple facets of the game and you need to come out ahead in all of them, ultimately. But what Alfonso has done here is positive and we are lucky to have him."

The Rangers have him. But for how long?

The All-Star, who has been linked to numerous trade reports during the past two years, is arbitration-eligible at the end of the season and could become a free agent after the 2006 campaign. The Rangers are considering a multiyear deal, but have not begun contract talks with the player. Soriano, who signed a $7.5 million, one-year deal before the 2005 season, could make $10 million next year.
