Forecast Who will be the #1 pick?

I was looking at some of the top players in the draft this year, and it doesn't look like there is a clear #1 pick. So the question is who will the Rays pick? Lets look at a few of the possibilities.

Brian Matusz LHP This is probably the guy that I pick, but that is only because I will almost always take a good starting pitcher over any position player. He can hit 93 or 94mph, and has good command of 4 pitches.

Buster Posey C A 21 year old college catcher that can hit, but he doesn't have a lot of power. He was originally a SS, so he is still learning the position. He has above average speed for a catcher, but that doesn't say much.

Tim Beckham SS An 18 year old high school shortstop. It sounds like he is still pretty raw, but has tons of potential offensively and defensively. Shortstop is a great position to draft, but I'd only pick Beckham if I'm looking for a guy that would help me several years in the future.

Pedro Alvarez 3B A 21 year old Third-Baseman. This is the guy that I think the Rays should pick, but they already have Longoria at 3B. Alvarez has a lot of talent and is a lot closer to being ready for the bigs than the other four players.

Well... I do like Alvarez, but I have to go with the pitcher. I think Matusz should be the top pick in the draft, but we'll see what happens.

I would think they would draft a first baseman.

I have to agree with you Crazy 8. The pitchewr seems to be the way the Rays should go. I also think he would be the quickest to majors for the Rays.

Then Alvarez would be a good choice, he would probably be better at 1B than 3B.

Then that would be my choice. They have Pena for three more years so have someone waiting in the wings.

I would go for Alvarez too, they've done a good job in recent memory stocking up on arms.

Pedro prolly won't even beat Zito these days. But Price should be a good one, think he'll pitch in the bigs this season?

I think so especially if the Rays are in a race. Probably in September.

Yes he will be up at some point this season. If the Rays stay in the race and they have no injuries it would be less likely, but if either of the two don't happen he has the talent to come up very soon.

Re: Who will be the #1 pick?

Posey lacks the upside, and Alvarez is making huge demands. Matusz also lacks the upside of a #1 starter, so the Devils will go with the player with the most potential to be a superstar, and that's Tim Beckham.

I really don't see the Rays getting Beckham because they already have Reid Brignac at SS.
