    Rays Get Floyd

The Rays and Cliff Floyd are close to an agreement on a one-year contract.
It's surprising the Rays didn't want someone a little more trustworthy with players like Geoff Jenkins and Brad Wilkerson still out there. Floyd will be pretty good when healthy, but he's a poor bet to make it through 400 at-bats, even if he's used as a DH a portion of the time. If Rocco Baldelli is healthy, the Rays will probably use Floyd against righties and Jonny Gomes against lefties. However, Gomes still could end up with more at-bats than Baldelli or Floyd anyway.
Floyd is coming off a pretty good year offensively as a platoon player. He still has some pop in his bat and will help out in the OF and DH. The Rays OF will have Crawford in LF, Upton in CF and Baldelli/Floyd in RF. Not a bad OF at all.

    Re: Rays Get Floyd

Rays signed outfielder Cliff Floyd, who had been with the Cubs, to a one-year contract with a club option for 2009.
Floyd will be guaranteed $2.75 million next season and can earn an addtional $2 million in incentives. He'll be a right fielder and DH against right-handers in his first full season in the American League. He previously played in 47 games for the Red Sox in 2002.
And in those 47 games he hit .316/.374/.561 with 7 HRs and 18 RBI. Rays made a good move here getting Floyd to help Baldelli out in RF and with Gomes at DH.
