    Baldelli, Cannot Cantu updates

    May 19, 2006 - Associated Press
2B Jorge Cantu (broken bone in his left foot) expects to undergo additional tests to see how much improvement there has been in his injured foot. He is hitting in a batting cage and throwing, but is not expected to return until at least next month. ... OF Rocco Baldelli (hamstring) played in an extended spring training game for the second consecutive day. ``O-for-4, didn't get hurt,'' Baldelli said with a smile. He could begin a minor league rehabilitation assignment next week with Triple-A Durham.

    A. Cantu is killing my fantasy team with Roberts hurt too.
    B. At least Baldelli is playing in his magical disabled adventure.
    C. What would the Rays do for a healthy Cantu and second Kazmir?

    and a further note:

Baldelli will be playing right field upon his return, meaning Gomes becomes full-time DH and Damian Hollins and Russell Branyan suck on some dong.

Cantu is on one of my teams and he's taking up a spot because I've already got Lee and Crisp using the 2 DL spots.

I hate Baldelli...highly overrated IMHO...go back to Woonsocket you dirtbag

Baldelli's a great defender who is already at the point where he's a 20/20 player with a high ceiling.

The only problem is the D-Rays rushed him to the majors.

nah, he's an overrated player who got drafted in the top 5 IIRC out of high school in RI where the high school baseball season is 18 games...how the hell can you make him a 1st round pick with such a small sample size against very weak competition?? High school teams here often have kids playing that wouldn't even be playing JV in most other states...RI sucks btw...

because he was selected on talent and potential and not production, like often happens with prospects.

He was the second best prospect in 2003 according to BaseballAmerica, behind only Teixeira. Come on, don't hate just 'cause you dislike RI.

    That is the unfortunate part.

Dude basically has every skill necessary to succeed in baseball, is intelligent, yet ****ing blew out his arm while rehabbing from a knee injury.

And what an arm he had! I can remember a game where he rifled the ball home twice and threw out both guys at the plate against the Red Sox. The guy could play and I don't feel that he was really rushed. He has done well in his short career.

Joey Gathright went 0-for-2 before being removed for a pinch-hitter on Monday. He's batting .195.
Gathright has 19 walks in 118 at-bats, but he still needs to do better than a .195 average, especially since he's good for no more than one extra-base hit per week. If the Rays decide Rocco Baldelli can play center field, they may decide to send Gathright down when Baldelli is ready to return.
Well no shit, Baldelli is ten times better than Gathright.

from what I've read, they want Rocco to RF when he comes back so he doesn't have to run as much and put as much strain on that knee

Rocco's Modern Life is now visiting Durham

Rocco Baldelli (hamstring) headed to Triple-A Monday to begin a minor league rehab assignment.
Baldelli will play right field at Triple-A because it puts less strain on his legs. "Let's just be prudent with this thing," manager Joe Maddon said. "There's nothing wrong with seeing him for 15 or 20 games down there and have him play and have a day off and see how it comes together. Because when I want him to come back, I want him to be back, period."

    Another Rocco update

Rocco Baldelli (hamstring) went 1-for-3 at Triple-A Sunday.
Baldelli is now 7-for-15 in five rehab appearances, but he's unlikely to cut short his assignment.

Rehab appearences usually don't mean a lot due to small sample size and different leagues, but 7-15 isn't bad. But I would be more concerned about speed than hitting.
