Cardinals Lance Berkman signs 1 year deal

Backup for Pujols, pinch hitter, possible spot starter in the outfield?

The 34-year-old first baseman-outfielder is a five-time NL All-Star with the Astros and last year batted .248 with Houston and the New York Yankees, finishing with 14 homers and 58 RBIs. Berkman was traded to the Yankees on July 31 and helped them win the AL wild card.

It seems like the team that needed him the least signed him.

Seriously odd move by STL. Holliday wasn't a great LF and now he's going to play RF?

The Cardinals love their NL-Central outcasts and reclamation projects. I don't understand this move for either the Cardinals or Berkman. Surely Berkman realizes that regular playing time is next to impossible unless he is lacing Pujols's drinks with poison (and even then it isn't guaranteed.)

Apparently the plan is to start him in left and shift Holliday to right. Even though Holliday has never really played right field, Berkman's experience is in right field, and that fact that this is a BAD IDEA.
