Cardinals optioned RHP Chris Perez to Triple-A Memphis.
The Cardinals had eight relievers for seven spots, and Perez's absence to rest a sore shoulder really cost him. This means that Brad Thompson will be on the squad as a middle reliever. Since both Thompson and Zach McClellan are fallbacks for the rotation, Perez could be the first pitcher recalled no matter whether it's a starter or reliever who goes down.

Looks like it will Motte and Franklin closing games for the Cards. Can't really see Franklin being the guy night in and night out so LaRussa will go with a small committee. Has Perez has a MRI on that shoulder yet?
