Trade Cards get Khalil Greene for a couple of pitchers

No definite word on what pitchers the Cardinals will be sending to San Diego yet, but it won't be anyone on the Major League roster. It looks like Mark Worrell might be one of them. He makes sense, because he isn't happy in the Cardinals system, and he has done well in the minors. The Padres also might be picking up $1Mil of Greene's salary.

This looks like a good trade for the Cardinals, and probably even the Padres. We finally get a SS that has some upside, and we don't give away any of our best pitchers. He has to be better than Izturis.

And the Padres save money, which means less reason to deal Peavy.

Which makes sense for them. Dealing Peavy would be a mistake since it doesn't look like they will get real value in return for him. The Cardinals can afford to pay Greene and still have 10-15Mil left to fill other holes.

Exactly. Seems like a fair deal for both sides....and Greene's numbers can only improve from leaving Petco...

Yeah, I think it can be a good deal for both sides. Worrell has been unhappy with the Cardinals and wanted a trade. So both players could use a change of scenary. As for Greene, he will benefit from being in a line-up with Pujols. The Cardinals couldn't have gotten a better shortstop for the price on the free agent market.

Lets hope that Greene will have as much success as the last shortstop we got from the Padres.

What's wrong with Izturis? He wouldn't cost near the money, the prospects and plays good defense. He hits nearly the same as Greene minus the power. I like the deal but Greene better not hit higher than 7th in that lineup.

Greene has more upside than Izturis does. With Izturis, what you see is what you get. He has a good glove and a decent bat with no power at all. His stats last season where about what he has done his whole career.

Greene had a bad year last season for whatever reason, but the year before he hit a lot better. Actually, he has hit better his whole career than he did last year. The question is whether he will be better once he leaves San Diego, and I think that answer will be a yes. A lot of players do better when they are in the same clubhouse as Albert Pujols. Another factor is that he hasn't ever really hit that well in Petco Park. Here are his home/away splits.

Look at his OPS home/road (He played over 100 games each season)
    2004- .693/.895
    2005 - .684/.772
    2006 - .628/.863
    2007 - .670/.840
2008 - .651/.540 - he also missed 1/3 of the season with injuries.

Look at his BA home/road (He played over 100 games each season)
    2004- .241/.301
    2005 - .256/.244
    2006 - .210/.288
    2007 - .216/.288
2008 - .215/.212 - he also missed 1/3 of the season with injuries.

Greene can supply the power that Izturis lacks. I would rather pay Greene 6.5Mil than Izturis $3-4Mil which is on average what he has made the last 3 seasons.
