Cardinals Wainwright To Return As Closer?

The Cards are being very cautious at the trade deadline and might have to turn Adam Wainwright back into a closer for the rest of the year. Wainwright was the closer in 2006 when the Cards won the World Series. Buster Olney said the other night that the Cards are likely going in this direction. Wainwright is about a week or two away from rehab games. Can the Cards wait this long?? No, but Wainwright to close isn't a bad idea. They still need a lefty.

It's an interesting idea. With Carpenter returning this week, the rotation may be more solidified. If the rotation is solid when Wainwright returns, then I like the idea. I like it a lot more than mortgaging our future for a closer. I'm not sure that Fuentes is available now that the Rockies are playing better.

I don't think Wainwright will be the closer. It was just announced that Izzy is the closer once again. So Wainwright will probably be in the rotation when he returns.

Yeah Izzy is closer till he blows another save.

If that is true, then he will only last a game. He will probably be allowed to blow saves the rest of the season.

I don't see LaRussa allowing him or anyone else to blow saves the rest of the year. A move will be made before that happens. Good thing the Cards didn't need a closer tonight.
