Cardinals GM Walt Jocketty reiterated Tuesday that he's looking to acquire two additional starters, which would likely result in Adam Wainwright remaining in the pen.
"Right now, we need to probably acquire two more pitchers, two more starters," Jocketty said. "Whether that's through trade or through free agency, I think it was important that at least we get Wells done. Instead of just having (Chris) Carpenter and (Anthony) Reyes, we now have Carpenter, (Kip) Wells and Reyes. We have to fill those two days." Wainwright was looked at as a member of the 2007 rotation thoughout most of 2006, but the questions regarding Jason Isringhausen's hip, as well as Wainwright's success in the playoffs, have changed that.
If Izzy comes back healthy, then Wainwright needs to start. He is better than Wells and probably will be better than the guys they sign to fill the number 4 and 5 spots.
