    Discussions with Jeff Weaver

The Cardinals are having internal discussions about Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Jeff Weaver, who was designated for assignment Friday and must either be traded or released by the All-Star break.

Weaver apparently has attracted enough interest that the Angels insist they will not release him, leaving the Cardinals to compete with a number of clubs, including the Dodgers, for the former 14-game winner. The extended loss of Mark Mulder to shoulder irritation may fuel the club's pursuit, according to a club source.

The Cardinals were initially hopeful Mulder would return shortly after the All-Star break. However, a weekend exam suggested it's more likely Mulder will be activated no sooner than mid-August.
There is a longer list of teams that are said to be after Weaver now too. Did the Cards miss out on their opportunity?

Are the Cards THAT desperate??? If the Reds bullpen continues to suck, then the Cards won't have anything to worry about.

The Cards didn't miss their chance because it's a dumb move and doesn't help. Wainright can do a better job than Weaver. In order to replace Mulder, you have to get someone better than Mulder and not the opposite!

Jocketty went and got him so now the fun begins! Wainwright should be moved into the rotation and Suppan to the pen. Jeff gave up 9 earned runs tonight. Cards are in trouble as they need a LFer and more starting pitching. Duncan has done OK in left so he may stay there along with Rodriguez.

Seriously, why did Jocketty get him? It looks like a desperate move considering how bad Weaver has been this year. You think he is any better than Suppan?
