    Boy Have Things Changed

Clay Buchholz was placed on the DL for what? That's right, a broken fingernail! What the hell has happened in baseball? Guys use to play with broken fingers, not just broken fingernails. I have seen a lot of weak ass shit in my time but this takes the cake! Guys back in the day use to throw in four man rotations and 300+ innings. Mickey Mantle played most of his career in pain today's guys couldn't understand and he was one of the best players of all-time. Now you have guys with turf toe and blisters and blah, blah blah. Grow a pair and tough it out!! Guys like Walter Johnson are rolling in their graves when they look down from the heavens and see this shit. I hope someone like Bob Gibson pays Clay a visit and slaps the piss out of him!

A broken fingernail? What a pussy.

I've played with a dislocated finger, strained muscles in pitching shoulder...and I've done combat training with sprained ankles, knees, and broken toes.

Boo hoo, I get paid millions of dollars to play a game that I learned when I was 5 so I'm gonna act like a sissy because I can and will still get paid.

    Blow me.

I'd play pro ball for a fraction of what those guys make. And I'd LOVE it!

Isn't the DL visit more like a convenient excuse to give him much needed time off after getting roughed up in back-to-back starts? Possibly bring up Colon for a couple of starts before the end of May...

If it is, a broken fingernail is the worst way to go about it!

A broken fingernail? He sounds like all the girls at my old high school. They couldn't finish their laps in PE because their nail polish was chipped. So sad.

I agree that it is sad that many players have become wimpy, although like DK said it may be more of a mental break than a physical thing. The broken nail is just their reason for his being placed on the DL.

Make up something else other than broken fingernail! That's why I don't think this is just for a mental break. Pulled hamstring, severely sprained ankle, anything other than broken fingernail.

Was it on the pointer or middle finger of his throwing hand?

    If it wasn't, I agree.

If it was, that affects his ability to throw a pitch.

I mean, it may seem silly, but if an injury affects a player's ability to play effectively why go out on the mound and cost your team success?

It was on his middle finger but who cares? Put a band-aid on it and throw. It's not like he throws a knuckler. Guys back in the day threw with broken fingers and had a lot more problems than Buchholz. Tired of hearing guys can't pitch because of hangnails and broken fingernails. Be a man!!

    Re: Boy Have Things Changed

People doing it back in the day doesn't negate the fact that a broken finger nail on one of the two prominent fingers on his throwing hand could cause him to not pitch half as well as he normally does....and could very well be the reason he was roughed up the past two outings.

let's not make decisions just because people did it that way before, let's make them based on which one makes more sense.

    Re: Boy Have Things Changed

No, I will base it on what people use to do and the fact that this is weak. Broken fingers are a hell of a lot worse than fingernails. There are no reports before hand to suggest that is why he was roughed up so I don't buy that. People were a lot tougher and knew what it meant to play the game. Pitchers are too babied now and they need to man up. Pitching today is the same as it was back then so nothing has changed except the mindset. Kids can learn something from how it was done in the past since they already do. Its weak and you have to play through it. Grow a pair Clay!!
