D'Backs Craig Counsell not named Jeter, therefore gets no love

Craig Counsell made a pretty good play today and won the 3rd best web gem last night on BBTN. But it was virtually the same type of play that Jeter made minus the bloody face. But Jeter won a gold glove due to that overrated play, and Counsell gets third on a nightly web gem.

So, is that play really not that great? Or is Jeter really praised too much?

are you talking about that "great" play Jeter made where he caught a routine fly in foul terretory, then, after catching the ball, dove into the stands?

exactly! But he did it in a Yankee uniform which is the biggest part you forgot. And the part that made the play especially fascinating.

This morning on SportsCenter Top 10 Plays, the Counsel play was #9 and the Jeter play wasn't even shown. Not even when they showed the highlight of the Yankee game was it shown, so I do not know what you are talking about.

the play in question (Jeter's) was from last season. Everyone (in the sports media) made a huge deal about it, acting like Jeter just made the greatest play in the history of baseball.

If he made it in a Padres uniform he'd be lucky to make Sportscenter's top 10.

If Khalil made the play, it would've made Sportscenter's top 10/get a webgem (cuz the sports media has fallen in love with him..) but it wouldn't have recieved half the reception.

At any rate it was a good play...he ran there from the SS position...but it was nothing near as great as they (media/yankee fans) made it out to be. As I stated, I wasn't exagerating, he did nothing more than run down a routine fly to foul territory, and then, almost a full second after catching the ball, dove head first into the fans.

It's really not big news that ESPN has chubby for anything Yank-Me's. After A-Rod's performance the other night I saw at least three different segments breaking down his swing, the pitches, etc etc.

Yep even a 20 minute BBTN had the first 10 minutes about ARod's night. No doubt it was great, but if it were anyone else not on a Yankee team, it would have been 1/4 the length.

yep, watching Sportscenter this morning they were recapping the Angels/Yankees game (in which the Angels won 4-1) the highlights? "Yep, A-Rod hit another home run!" oh, btw, the Angels won 4-1

First of all the play last year occurred in a Yanks-Sox classic game, that alone blows it up and while Nomar was busy sitting on the bench b/c of the sniffles Jeter was sacrificing his body for a game. The catch itself was not great but the aftermath was, to be able to run full speed for 20-30 yards then catch the ball and have the presence to dive into the stands rather than have his knees shattered was amazing. It was DUMB but a great play. I would prefer he not do that especially in a reg season game but he plyas hard all the time and that's what made it such a great play.

    1. I'm not stating that the catch wasn't a good catch, merely that it was blown way out of proportion.

    2. No one ever accused Jeter of not being a good shortstop

    3. I fail to see how the fact that it was against the Red Sox makes the play any better.

    4. you contradict yourself when at one point in your post you talk about how he's "sacraficing his body for a game" and then go on to call it a brilliant play because he had "the presence to dive into the stands rather than have his knees shattered" and then go back to your first viewpoint and proclaim that you wish he wouldn't do that and call him "DUMB" for doing it.

    5. "The catch itself was not great, but the aftermath was"...huh? so are you stating the play should've been lauded just as much even if he didn't catch the ball? I guess Padre fans should've been singing Brian Giles' praises last year after he did the same exact thing (diving into the fans).....

Everything Yanks-Sox is overhyped so a showdown in an all-time classic Yanks-Sox game makes it even more overblown.

I don't think he was dumb for diving in the stands, I think he was dumb for making the play. In the grand scheme of things I would rather have him healthy and lose that game than make that play and win.

It was the whole sequence not just the catch. The aftermath made it a much better play. If it was in oakland where there is more foul territory it wouldn't have been as great a play b/c he wouldn't have had to dive into the stands.

Basically the issue is that some of our teams are WAY under-represented in the Media, while others are the main focus daily. It is no surprise. Is anyone really surprised by this anymore? Those of us who root for the under-represented teams see great plays daily (such as that double play Kahlil to Blum on Wed. night).

Many of us only have BBTN or ESPN to get our baseball coverage. It really sux to have to watch these biased broadcasts. Those in the big market cities won't share the angst that we encounter daily.

Ah, this I agree with, but nobody in this thread was arguing this fact, but that the fact shouldn't exsist.

It was the whole sequence not just the catch. The aftermath made it a much better play. If it was in oakland where there is more foul territory it wouldn't have been as great a play b/c he wouldn't have had to dive into the stands.
I refuse to agree with this. It would be different if he had caught the ball right at the wall and then immidiately had to dive into the stands...or even better, had the ball been in the stands and he dove into the fans and caught it. But neither was the case, what was the case was he chased down a fly ball into foul territory, then ran a few more feet and then dove into the stands. It's no different than a play Jay Payton made last year in centerfield at PetCo in deep right/centerfield...except he didn't jump the wall afterwards and swan dive into the crowd.

    I'm with the Padre fans.

Although the Sox get FAR more hype than the Padres (and they shouldn't), I have another example. Trot Nixon ran full board and caught a ball over the foul wall, and that ranged from the #5 webgem to #3 PotW (SC). I'd argue that was more impressive than Jeter's catch.
