Was he going to play baseball or soccer?

It wasn’t as easy a call as you might think.

“I played soccer from the time I was 5 years old. I didn’t play baseball until I was 9 or 10. I didn’t want to, because I loved soccer that much,” Lopez said. “When I finally played a little baseball, I was still playing soccer every day.”

Baseball didn’t feel natural.

“The first time I put on a baseball glove, I put it on my right hand – the wrong hand. I’d never even seen a baseball game until then, and I was 10,” Lopez said.

What the Mariners scouts saw in 2000 was a player with soft hands and quick feet – a gift from his favorite sport, Lopez insists – and an infielder with pop in his bat. What they wondered was whether he was ready to devote himself to professional baseball.
This is a very interesting article I read in the paper yesterday. I wanted to get other peoples insight on this. Its from the Tacoma News Tribune.
