Surprise team in the Santana sweepstakes?

    Could it happen?

Minnesota Twins ace Johan Santana is one of several players the Mariners have inquired about heading into next week's baseball winter meetings. Multiple sources in Minnesota and elsewhere in baseball indicated Thursday that the Mariners have already spoken with the Twins about their top pitcher. No formal offer is known to have been made, and the Mariners are one of several teams to have expressed interest in the two-time Cy Young Award winner. Mariners general manager Bill Bavasi, in a conference call with local reporters Thursday, declined to comment on any specific players he was after. But Bavasi did suggest he'd be prepared to deal young prospects — like Adam Jones, Brandon Morrow or Jeff Clement — if the right trade proposal came along. ... A baseball source said Thursday the Mariners are likely a "second-tier" contender for Santana, largely because he has expressed a preference for playing on the East Coast.

I am not sure if the three of them would be enough since the Yankees are offering bigger spects. This is getting awfully interesting.

The Mariners have dropped out of the race for Johan Santana, MLB.com reports.
Agent Peter Greenberg insists that Santana is willing to accept trades to teams other than the Yankees and Red Sox, but the Mariners took themselves out of contention anyway. There was little to indicate that they ever made a serious bid, though in Adam Jones, Brandon Morrow, Jose Lopez and Wladimir Balentien, they had some interesting pieces to offer up. They're primarily focusing on signing Hiroki Kuroda at the moemnt.
M's just don't have the pitching to compete with Yanks/Saux.

    In a word, no.
I did a lot of good things as a sim league GM.

Ah, give me something clever to say here.

While Jones would help their CF issue.

Clement is a Catcher. No need

And they are not high on Morrow.
