Mariners Mariners Aquire Perez From Cleveland

SEATTLE (TICKER) -- The Seattle Mariners acquired first baseman Eduardo Perez from the Cleveland Indians on Friday.

The Indians received minor league infielder Asdrubal Cabrera in the deal.

Perez is expected to join the Mariners for Saturday's game against the Colorado Rockies.

Perez, 36, hit .303 with eight home runs and 22 RBI in 37 games with the Indians this season.

"Eduardo is a veteran, proven righthanded bat that allows us to be stronger against lefthanded pitching," Mariners executive vice president and general manager Bill Bavasi said. "We think adding him to our big league club strengthens a spot that we want to be stronger in as we look for the second half of the season."

Since the start of the 2002 season, Perez has hit .294 with 33 homers against lefthanded pitching.

In his 13th major league season, Perez is a career .250 hitter with 78 home runs and 283 RBI.

Cabrera, 20, has spent the entire season at Triple-A Tacoma of the Pacific Coast League where he hit .236 with three homers and 22 RBI in 60 games. He did not make an error in his first 36 games and ranks first among PCL shortstops with a .986 fielding percentage.

Perez looks to get most of his time playing DH against lefties, considering that Carl Everett can not hit lefties. Giving up a decent prospect- especially one who looks MLB ready with the glove, is just compounding a terrible deal in the beginning- Everett is aging, and hasn't hit lefties well for some time. Oh well, its not as thoug Cabrera could oust Betancourt from the SS position.

Exactly. Cabrera would've never seen the field unless he was moved to 3B and continued to have his GG caliber glove. He was a very good prospect, but became a bargaining piece when YuBet became a stud at age 24. I wish we could've moved him with some other pieces of value to get a SP to replace Pineiro, but Perez can MASH against lefties, he is a 3/4 type hitter against LHP's, which we suck ass against this year. Good move, but it sucks to see Cabrera go.

We should have packaged Cabrera and more to get Perez as well as a pitcher like Paul Byrd. That would have been nice. I'm thinking we will need to deal Rob Johnson to get that SP though.
