Mariners 4/14/06: M's vs. Red Sox

Seattle Mariners (5-5) vs. Boston Red Sox (6-3)

Fenway Park @ 4:05 PM PDT
    TV: FSNW, NESN

    Jamie Moyer (0-1, 4.38) vs. Curt Schilling (2-0, 1.93)

After a subpar 2005 season, Curt Schilling seems to have recaptured his dominant form.

Schilling looks to give the Boston Red Sox another strong outing when they open a four-game series with the Seattle Mariners on Friday at Fenway Park.

Schilling went 8-8 with a 5.69 ERA -- his highest since making just five appearances in 1989 -- while recovering from offseason ankle surgery last year and didn't earn his second win until July. This season, however, Schilling has won his first two starts, including Saturday's 2-1 victory over Baltimore.......
.....He will face Seattle's Jamie Moyer, who is 0-1 with a 4.38 ERA through his first two outings of the season. The 43-year-old left-hander gave up three runs and six hits in 5 2-3 innings of Saturday's 3-0 loss to Barry Zito and the Oakland Athletics.

Moyer is 6-9 with a 6.58 ERA in 20 career appearances, including 18 starts, against the Red Sox. It's his worst ERA against any American League team.

Seattle (5-5) has won two straight since a four-game losing streak, including Thursday's 9-5 victory over the Cleveland Indians. Ichiro Suzuki and Jose Lopez each hit two-run homers for the Mariners, who came back from an early 4-0 deficit.

Ichiro is 4-for-7 over the last two games following an 0-for-18 slump.

This should prove if we need more work to get to playoff contention or not. Big early four game set with Boston.

Moyer with a nasty curve to K Ortiz. Still two on, none out for the Sox.

Varitek flies out to end the inning. Nice job by Moyer to get out of the jam.

Yeah, since when does Moyer throw a curve? He's got a fastball and a changeup. Well, "fastball". Heh.

Surely you jest. He's got the 4 seamer, change, curve, and the occasional cutter. Unless of course you were being sarcastic and I'm a little slow.

Manny K's, Varitek is up with 2 outs.
