San Jose Mercury News (registration required): "The Giants are making free-agent center fielder Gary Matthews Jr. a top priority this winter, believing he can energize the top of the lineup and bring a dynamic presence to an outfield defense that was among the worst in the major leagues this year."
Can we honestly think Matthews can put up those same type of numbers? Sure he can play defense but this team needs to hit as well.

San Francisco Chronicle: "There are alternatives on the free-agent market, including a potential star in Aramis Ramirez... One whose agent has received an exploratory call from the Giants is Nomar Garciaparra, who batted .303 with 20 homers, 93 RBIs and a .367 on-base percentage for the Dodgers in 2006."
Nomar at third makes me sick. Maybe at first but not at third.

The Giants have expressed interest in having free agent Rich Aurilia return to San Francisco.
Signing Aurilia would give the Giants a lot more flexibility. They have three holes in their infield, and Aurilia would be an option to fill any of them. There will be quite a bit of demand for Aurilia this winter, but the Giants might be more willing than most to give him a multiyear deal, something that could work in their favor.
Again I rather see him play third than Feliz.

The Giants expressed interest in both Jeff Suppan and Gary Matthews Jr. during a recent discussion with agent Scott Leventhal.
It was known they'd be one of the teams after Matthews, and that GM Brian Sabean also likes Suppan shouldn't come as any sort of a surprise. "Jeff is from Southern California, an hour away. He has a comfort zone in California," Leventhal said. "I talked to Supe about his feelings about San Francisco, and it's something that's exciting to him." To sign Suppan, the Giants would likely have to ante up even more than the $27 million they paid for Matt Morris a year ago. Such a move could easily work out just as poorly.
Suppan is not that dependable to pay him all that money.

    • The Giants, in the market for a center fielder, are moving along in discussions with Juan Pierre, the National League leader with 204 hits last season. The word in Naples is that Pierre could get a deal for three years and about $30 million -- if not from San Francisco, then somebody else.
Good god man!!! Winn and now Pierre? Talk about the worst arms in an OF! He gives us a leadoff man and some more speed but kills the defense especially for $10 mil per year. Throw $5 mil more on top of that and give it to Soriano!!

Reefer, are the Giants going to re-sign Schmidt or are they going to move on without him?

No chance the Giants will outbid teams like the Cubs and Mariners. We will get a draft pick for him though.
