You're comparing apples and oranges here. Catchers switch positions all the time when they can no longer squat for 9 innings. Sometimes they do so beforehand to avoid the wear and tear, ala Craig Biggio.

and LTR, I'm not saying he won't catch again, i'm just saying him saying he's going to doesn't mean anything other than that he wants to.

And I'm saying Posey's comments need to end any speculation about a position change. Its not going to happen any time soon.

I hope he keeps catching as a weak ankle can only cause issues with a swing as the game progresses. Good news for the NLWest if he continues to squat.

With nine months to recover, rehab and get into baseball shape, I doubt its going to be weak but continue to have your fantasies.

    Re: Giants are fucked!

He had surgery on his ankle to rebuild the ligaments so while its not a miracle, its a solution Pitchers can recover from TJ but a catcher can't recover from ankle ligament surgery? I had three knee surgeries in a month and didn't need close to nine months to recover and i don't have the resources Posey did. You're wishful thinking.

Neither one of us are doctors and neither one of us knows the severity of Buster's ankle problem. The only thing we know is that it's bad enough to keep him out the rest of this season.

I know the trainers have said that it would take 6-8 weeks to recover but that they are not going to push Posey to play this year.

I'll take the trainer's word over anyone's here.

That being said, they could be being overly optimistic for the sake of P.R.

We won't really know for sure until he comes back and attempts to catch again.

I don't see why they would lie for PR purposes, makes no sense. Only way it would make sense is if they were going to attempt to bring back Posey this season but since they aren't, no reason to lie. 9 months to get fully healthy is plenty of time to get that ankle back to 100%, according to the trainers estimate.

    Re: Giants are fucked!

I don't think they would try to purposely lie for PR and didn't intend on implying as much. What I meant is that they naturally want Posey to be back and at full health for the team. Their desire to see him back could possibly feed an overly optimistic prognosis.

I'm not saying this is the case, though. Just presenting a feasible possibility.

Well even if 6-8 weeks is overly optimistic, it wouldn't be far off from a realistic prognosis so 9 months should and will be plenty of time to get back to 100%, of course if all goes well and no setbacks.

    Re: Giants are fucked!

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Nationals have "reached out" to the Giants to gauge their interest in trading for veteran catcher Ivan Rodriguez.
It's a bit surprising that the Giants haven't been more aggressive in their search for a new starting catcher. Perhaps they've tested a few different markets and balked at the asking prices. Either way, it now seems that the Nats are now officially dangling the 39-year-old Rodriguez as trade bait. He's batting .211/.259/.342.

Why so against? Pudge hasn't been a franchise player since his multiple years with Detroit. The Nats are the only team recently that have kept him longer than one season, he's on his way out, but still produces. He would be a stop gap and nothing more, he certainly isn't going to take the job away from Posey, but would provide more stability and pop than what the Giants have at the moment and probably for not much dough.

His .211 average barely over the Mendoza line also is a factor IMO.
