Bonds trial to begin March 21st

Since the other thread was locked and closed I guess we need another one since this IS ONCE AGAIN A TOPIC

Hopefully this walking pharmacy gets put away for years....Could there be a better person to make an example of out there......NOPE !!!

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- In March 2003, Barry Bonds' business partner and personal trainer stood in front of the slugger's locker in the San Francisco Giants clubhouse and appeared to discuss steroids and needles.

The business partner, Stevie Hoskins, secretly recorded the conversation with the trainer, Greg Anderson, and later turned it over to federal investigators.

On Friday, Bonds' attorney will ask U.S. District Judge Susan Illston to prohibit the recording from being played during the former player's perjury trial, scheduled to begin March 21 with jury selection.

Prosecutors want the jury to hear the tape to bolster their case that alleges Bonds lied to a federal grand jury when he denied knowingly taking performance enhancing drugs.

Prosecutors allege that Anderson can be heard in the recording boasting about supplying Bonds with a new steroid designed to evade urine tests. The prosecutors plan to show the jury the results of a urine test collected from Bonds in 2003 as part of Major League Baseball's inaugural testing program that included all players.

Bonds' test initially came back negative. But prosecutors went back and tested it after famed anti-doping chemist Don Catlin developed a test for the designer steroid THG, which allegedly showed up in Bonds' urine. They say the Hoskins recording shows Anderson discussing Bonds using THG

A ruling for Bonds would be another blow to the prosecution. On Thursday, the government pared down the number of charges from 11 to five, although the Major League Baseball home run leader still faces the same punishment he always has.

I like how it says the gov't "pared" down the charges from 11 to 5, because, "Shit, we can't prove half this stuff" doesn't sound as appealing.

Barry Bonds is in the spotlight again and not for his accomplishments in baseball but for what may have helped him perform on the field.

Bonds contends he was duped into taking steroids by Greg Anderson, who was his personal trainer at the time. Anderson allegedly gave Bonds an arthritis cream and flax seed oil which, to Barry's surprise, was illegal performance enhancing drugs.

    1998

According to a book released in 2006 by a couple of San Francisco Chronicle reporters, Bonds began taking steroids in 1998 and learned to inject himself with Winstrol. He also took human growth hormone and other illegal substances. Barry continued "juicing" for at least five seasons. Although baseball didn't ban steroids until the completion of the 2002 season, it was an illegal activity in the U.S.

    September 2003

Agents found human growth hormone and anabolic steroids during a raid of the BALCO facility (Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative) and Greg Anderson's home. Presumably some of these drugs were earmarked for Bonds.

    December 2003

Bonds testified before a grand jury and denied any claims he took steroids. Prosecutors had strong evidence that Bonds took steroids with lab tests to prove it. Ultimately, Barry negates all evidence and sticks to his claim of ignorance regarding the chemical composition of said arthritis cream and flaxseed oil.

    2004

Gary Sheffield tells a grand jury that Barry Bonds brought him into BALCO'S world and Bonds was the puppet master. According to Sheffield, guys like Anderson did whatever Barry wanted.

    2006

The book Game of Shadows is released describing Bonds' long history of steroid abuse.

    2006

In the book Love Me, Hate Me: Barry Bonds and the Making of an Antihero, the author mentions that during a conversation with dinner guests, Bonds explains he is tired of the steroid drama and, although aging, intends on taking some hardcore stuff so he could finish his career strong.

    March 2006

Major League Baseball officially began an investigation into BALCO, Bonds, and any other players connected with the aforementioned. Bud Selig said, "Nothing is more important to me than the integrity of the game of baseball." This is baseball's biggest investigation since the Pete Rose scandal.

    2007

Bonds is indicted by a federal grand jury and charged with perjury and obstruction of justice regarding his alleged steroid abuse.

    2009

Bonds unofficially retires, according to his agent Jeff Boris. As the years progress, Boris has found it difficult to find Barry a team. Bonds feels he can still play.

    2009

The trial involving Bonds is slated for March 2, 2009. This trial date is postponed.

    March 21, 2011

Bonds is in court and set to face charges from the 2007 federal indictment.

    Legacy

Bonds' legacy is on trial. Regardless of the case's outcome, one of the greatest athletes of our time will be remembered as an alleged steroid abuser who holds a blemished record.

If Barry admitted he took steroids, maybe the questioning would've ended years ago. The fans would have forgiven his judgment error, and he may even be playing today.

Nevertheless, the nightmare continues and his situation will not improve anytime soon.

What sucks is that he deprived other teams in the NL West of a level playing field in those five seasons, save for the one season Luis Gonzalez hit 57 home runs, but Gonzo also was probably juicing.

2:53 p.m.: What an orchidometer is used to measure

With a final flourish on testicle size and steroids, Bonds' lawyer, Allen Ruby, finished his cross-examination of anti-doping expert Larry Bowers. Ruby asked whether it is possible to measure the shrinkage of testicles (a purported side effect of steroid use) without an orchidometer, which a quick Google search shows is used, well, to measure the size of testicles. This is clearly a pre-emptive strike at former Bonds girlfriend Kimberly Bell, who is expected to testify that she witnessed such shrinkage in Bonds. It is presumed this was done without an orchidometer.

Bowers, however, testified: "It's really not my area of expertise."

Prosecutor Jeff Nedrow is now questioning Bowers again.
They should make him endure this just for the sake of embarrassing him....

3:22 p.m.: Expert finishes testimony, court ends for the week. Kimberly Bell likely to take stand Monday.

Anti-doping expert Larry Bowers just finished up his stint on the witness stand, ending the testimony for the day and for this week (the trial is dark on Fridays). On Monday, the government is expected to call several agents, but Bonds' ex-mistress Kimberly Bell is likely to take the stand. Former Giants trainer Stan Conte and Kathy Hoskins will then follow.

U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag slipped into the back row of the courtroom this afternoon to watch her troops. Haag has been below the radar since taking over as U.S. Attorney last year, but one way or another, she'll have to field questions when the Bonds verdict comes in.

Re: Bonds trial to begin March 21st

Hell hath no fury like a mistresses scorn
SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds' former mistress testified Monday that the slugger blamed a 1999 elbow injury on steroid use.

Called by federal prosecutors to the witness stand in Bonds' perjury trial, Kimberly Bell said that she asked Bonds about the problem with his left elbow, which she described as "a big lump ... it looked awful."

She testified that Bonds responded by saying his steroid use caused the injury, because the muscle and tendons grew too fast for the joint to handle.

    "It blew out," she said.

She also said that Bonds talked about the widespread use of steroids among baseball players, including his suspicion that Mark McGwire was juicing during his assault on the single-season home run record in 1998 -- a mark that Bonds later broke.

"He mentioned that other players do it and that's how they got ahead, that's how they achieved," Bell testified.

Bonds is accused of four counts of making false statements and one of obstruction for telling a federal grand jury in 2003 that he never knowingly took performance-enhancing drugs. Dressed in a dark blue suit, Bonds alternately watched Bell on the stand, scribbled notes and whispered to one of his defense attorneys, Allen Ruby, as she testified.

Bell said she and Bonds met on July 3, 1994, and attended a barbecue that day. From there, they shared a nine-year romantic relationship that continued even after Bonds married another woman in 1999.

She further testified that Bonds' sexual performance declined in the later years of their relationship. She said that his testicles changed shape and shrank. Bell also testified that Bonds grew -- and shaved -- chest hair and developed acne on his back.

Gonzo had as much power with the bat through age 30 as James Loney does, and suddenly develops 30-home run power (peaking at 57 homers) on his own? That makes little sense.

Ruth's career high of 60 is a little more consistent with respect to the rest of his career batting than Gonzo's career high of 57, dude.

Yeah, that 57 was insane. I was still a kid with no real knowledge of steroids. I remember thinking, how in the hell is he doing this?

I just hope he gets jail time and anything else that could happen.
