    Bonds update

SAN FRANCISCO -- Colorado Rockies first baseman Jason Giambi says Barry Bonds' personal trainer first sent him steroids at the end of 2002.

Giambi is the first athlete called to testify in Bonds' perjury trial. Giambi testified that he met trainer Greg Anderson after the 2002 season while both were traveling with a U.S. all-star team barnstorming through Japan.

Before the start of the 2003 season, Giambi said that Anderson shipped him steroids and instructions on when to use them.

Giambi provided no direct testimony about Bonds. Instead, prosecutors hope to use his testimony – and that of other players – to show that Anderson was a well-known steroids dealer. Anderson is in jail for refusing to testify at the trial.

Giambi said he used the steroids until August 2003.

One charge dismissed.....wont alter punishment if found guilty.....defense rests w/o calling Bonds

    CBS/AP)

SAN FRANCISCO - One of the five charges in Barry Bonds' perjury trial has been dropped and the defense has rested without calling a single witness.

Bonds' attorney Allen Ruby announced the move Wednesday morning, which means the slugger will not take the stand in his own defense against charges that he lied to a federal grand jury by saying he never knowingly used performance-enhancing drugs.

    Barry Bonds: Through the Years

The jury of eight-women and four men was sent home and ordered to return Thursday to begin deliberations after hearing closing arguments and instructions from the judge.

The Bonds team rested shortly after U.S. District Judge Susan Illston dismissed one of the five charges pending against Bonds. The dropped charge makes things easier for the jury but won't have a meaningful effect on the punishment Bonds faces if convicted on any of the remaining counts.

Bonds is still charged with three counts of lying to the grand jury and a fourth charge of obstruction.

This is why jury trials are a farce. How could anyone honestly be undecided whether or not the defendant committed perjury, yet find him guilty for obstruction of justice?

And once again the only real winners are the attorneys. Bonds pretty much paid for that new ballpark and everyone knows he juiced and yes this was another massive waste of taxpayer dollars.

Yeah, either way it was a huge waste of time, effort and money. 8 years to get a bogus charge that has the possibility of being dropped and no jail time. Job well done! $55 million down the drain
