It's not hard to remember the last time Noah Lowry took the mound against the Astros' Chris Sampson. It was five days ago in Houston.
Lowry might get the feeling of deja vu as he opens the Giants' three-game series against Houston on Monday, but hopefully the familiar matchup comes with a different ending -- one that doesn't conclude with a 2-1 Giants loss.
The loss went to Lowry, who tossed an eight-inning quality start and allowed two earned runs, but the Giants provided little offensive support. Houston's Hunter Pence was the deciding factor. Pence went 4-for-4 and hit a go-ahead homer. Pence's success probably had to do with the fact that there was little scouting information on the recently recalled rookie. Either way, Lowry has all the information he needs now.
Lowry will be ready for Pence this time around, and they'll be on Lowry's home turf where he holds a 3-0 record and 1.17 ERA against the Astros. The Astros are 2-4 against lefties on the road this season.
"We play them again at home in five days," Lowry said after the Houston game. "I'm going to have some different things to do. I'm not going to tell you guys what it is. But I'll have a better time then."
Pitching matchup
SF: LHP Noah Lowry (4-4, 3.04 ERA)
Lowry has been the Giants' most consistent starter this season, lasting at least six innings in all but one of his outings, when he lasted five. Despite earning the loss when he started in Houston on Wednesday, Lowry still holds a 1.45 career ERA against the Astros.
HOU: RHP Chris Sampson (4-3, 3.56 ERA)
Sampson earned his fourth win of the year on Wednesday against the Giants, allowing one run over six innings. The right-hander shut out the Giants for five innings after a rough first inning. This will be Sampson's second consecutive outing against San Francisco. Prior to this stretch, he had never faced the Giants.
Player to watch
The Giants have only seen Sampson once before and that was when Randy Winn went 2-for-3 against the rookie right-hander on Wednesday.
