Sabean Finally Did Something Right

According to ESPN's Peter Gammons and The Associated Press, the Giants and Barry Zito have agreed to a seven-year, $126 million contract.
He's getting Vernon Wells money, plus an option year that could make the deal worth $144 million for eight years. Not that they should have gone this high, but Zito would have made a lot more sense on the Mets. The Giants still don't project to have a very good team this year, and the combination of having one of baseball's oldest teams and weakest farm systems suggests things are only going to get worse. The Giants could stay afloat in the post-Barry Bonds era by spending $100 million-$120 million per year, but they're probably not going to build another great team with Brian Sabean at the helm.

Its true that the Giants won't be a good team THIS year but to say we can't after that is stupid. We do have young talent like Misch, Anderson and Sadler as the Giants were reluctant to trade but now might be more open to a trade now that we have Zito. Bonds will be gone after this season (if he ever signs) as will Benitez and possibly Vizquel. Klesko, Feliz and Klesko are also goners so this team can improve greatly after the 07 season if Sabean makes better moves than he did this year. Great signing even if the money is ungodly but the Giants had to make a splash and that they did.

Do you think this Zito contract will hurt you at all in the next 2-3 years as far as holding you guys back .... The contract is pretty insane, and he's likely to see all 8 years of it..... Aside from Bonds who else do you lose that is a big contract in the next 2-3 years ??

If Bonds signs then leaves, that's close to $10 million since they are trying to defer some money and then Benitez will make $7.6 million in 07, Feliz and his $5.1 mil, Matheny's $4 mil and Vizquel's $4 mil. Plus you got the little contracts of Sweeney, Klesko and even the great Tim Worrell. So that's close to $31 mil freed up after the 07 season. The Giants have young guys ready to step up like Frandsen, Sanchez, Sadler and Misch so I don't see it hurting us that much.

Under the terms of his deal with the Giants, Barry Zito can void his 2014 option should it vest and receive a $3.5 million buyout.
Zito will make $10 million this year, $14.5 million in 2008, $18.5 million each of the following three years, $19 million in 2012 and $20 million in 2013. The vesting $18 million option for 2014 kicks in with 200 innings in 2013, 400 innings in 2012-13 or 600 innings in 2011-13. It contains a $7 million buyout if it doesn't vest, and if it does, Zito can opt out and receive $3.5 million.

Zito only making $14.5 million in '08 will gives us a chance to replace Bonds with more ease. Someone along the lines of Jermaine Dye or Andruw Jones.
