Giants signed outfielder Dave Roberts, who had been with the Padres, to a three-year contract.
The deal is reportedly worth $18 million. Roberts will take over as the Giants' center fielder, making Randy Winn a below average right fielder. He'll also become the club's leadoff hitter in a lineup that could yet look surprisingly similar to last year's: CF Roberts, SS Omar Vizquel, RF Winn, LF Barry Bonds or a fellow free agent, 2B Ray Durham, 1B Rich Aurilia, 3B Pedro Feliz and C Bengie Molina. Of course, those last three players aren't officially signed, but all should be Giants soon. The problem with Roberts is that he's a 34-year-old who has never played in 130 games in a season. The Giants need to find a right-handed hitter to complement him, even if it's a right fielder (with Winn moving back and forth). It's possible that Todd Linden could fill that role.
That's not a very good looking lineup. Hopefully the Giants do not sign Feliz and Aurilia plays third.
