Mike Matheny won't play again this season after making little progress in his recovery from a concussion over the last two months.
"This does not mean his career is over," trainer Stan Conte said. "It means we need more time for the symptoms to subside." Matheny, in the second year of a three-year, $10.5 million contract, hit just .231/.276/.338 in 160 at-bats before getting hurt. The Giants will say they miss his defense and leadership, but the offense that Eliezer Alfonzo has provided since Matheny went down has probably more than made up for it.
Alfonzo has been great offensively but is no where near Matheny when it comes to defense. I hope to see him back next year but who knows.
