"The Giants are said to be one of several teams interested in first baseman Ryan Shealy, the big, 27-year-old Rockies farmhand whose path is blocked by Todd Helton... Shealy bats right-handed. ... ESPN analyst Steve Phillips, the former Mets general manager, reported the Giants and Dodgers are vying for Pirates closer Mike Gonzalez..."
Finally some talk about some real difference makers. Shealy would be extremely welcomed and Gonzalez could be a huge help. At least then Worrell would be released.

" Casey remains the Giants' top trade target, and it's possible the club will seek to acquire left-hander Mike Gonzalez as part of a larger package... Another first base option could be Javy Lopez, who is telling friends that he wants out of Baltimore at all costs. "

    Giants after Vidro?

I don't think this one is true. Doesn't make much sense plus I think they will give Fransden a go at it next season.

    Finley talking up Hillenbrand
    http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercu...s/15088475.htm

"What the Giants need is a first baseman with decent power. Hillenbrand, who turns 31 on July 27, suits that description, having hit .301 with 12 home runs for Toronto. The right-handed-batting Hillenbrand also can play third base, which would give Manager Felipe Alou some much-needed flexibility."
    Sabean, listen to the man!

Hillenbrand at 1st base is not a bad option.

I don't want him at 3rd for the Padres, however.

San Francisco Chronicle: "The Giants are not done talking to Pittsburgh, even if they are out of the Sean Casey market, because general manager Brian Sabean wants to bolster the bullpen by reacquiring Salomon Torres from the Pirates, sources told The Chronicle."
San Jose Mercury News (registration required) "One of the more intriguing relievers the Giants are apparently considering for bullpen help is Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Roberto Hernandez. They hope it would be a case of history repeating itself."
Borowski has also been rumored according to the second article. If I had to choose, I would go with Hernandez because of experience. Anyone can do better than Worrell.

Hey Reefer, I thought you said Zito wasn't going to be traded? Seems the Mets are making a huge push for him.....

Will you admit you were wrong if he does? Apparently, there's a deal on the table right now that would send Zito to the Mets.

    This is accordint to MLB.com.....

    Contract status: Signed through 2006
July 29: The New York Post said that the Billy Beane of the A's will part with Barry Zito for Lastings Milledge and Aaron Heilman

There's a multi-team and multi-player deal between the Red Sox, Padres and a few other teams that would ultimately send Mike Lowell and Coco Crisp to the Padres for Scott Linebrink, possibly George Kottaras and a few other prospects. That deal should be finalized sometime tomorrow.

Beane says he is not going to trade Zito just to trade him. They are still in the race and I don't think the Mets will let go of Milledge and the A's won't part with Zito. Of course I will admit I was wrong but at least I would be right about the Padres having no shot at him

I don't remember saying the Padres had a shot at him, I did mention that I would like to see him here and that he grew up in San Diego.
