Is that all you're concerned with? I hope for your sake that your team is far more concerned with the long term picture than you are.

Well since we are in the middle of the season, I am more concerned on this year rather than the offseason. Schmidt will be a FA and one of the better ones on the market and Schmidt's not just going to take the hometown discount. We have to wait and see. Nothing I can do about it but I do know Schmidt will not be traded because they do want to keep him beyond this year. Do I need to add Schmidt to my sig?

So you'd rather potentially have 1/2 season of Schmidt than many seasons of a good package of players you can get in a trade?

No, I rather get to the playoffs this season with Schmidt leading the way.

I'd think that means that you have no qualms with him walking away after the season if he chooses to do so. Am I correct in thinking that?

I can actually see the later proposed deal going down. The Giants would be getting a frontline starter to replace the frontline starter leaving.

Schmidt should sign with the Padres this offseason if he knows what's best for him. That's the one and only way to guarantee he doesn't have to face them anymore

Schmidt is far better than Vasquez or Garcia so that dog don't hunt. Dam, if he chooses to go elsewhere it will suck but it happens. We will have tons of money off the books after this year to go out and get FA's to make this team better. That being said, I think the Giants will have the money to offer him a three or four yr deal and keep him in SF. Something like 4 yrs/$48-$50 million. Zito will get far more than that so I am basing it on Zito's potential contract.

If Schmidt goes to FA's and doesn't sign with the Giants......Than he's going to Seattle.
